Nutella Hot Chocolate

I have to admit I love Nutella. I can eat it by the spoonful.  So Nutella flavoured hot chocolate sounds like heaven to me.  This recipe is super easy to make and I have included a few variations to suit anyone's taste.

Ingredients:
  • 1-2 tablespoon Nutella
  • 1 cup water
Place the Nutella and water in a sauce pan.  Heat on medium stirring until the Nutella is dissolved.  Bring to a boil. Pour into your favorite mug and top with whipped cream and chocolate shavings or marshmallows.

Variations:

Microwave method:
Pour water/milk into microwavable cup and heat for 2 min.  Add Nutella and microwave for another minute. (Ezara mentioned below that if you have a higher power microwave these times are a bit high; try heating the water for 1 minute, add the Nutella and heat for another 40s). Stir and serve.

Make it creamier:
Replace all or part of the water with milk/cream.  Stir/whisk constantly while heating. Froth up the milk if you have a frother.

Make it more chocolaty:
Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.

Make it spicier:
Add a pinch (or more) of cayenne pepper and/or a teaspoon of cinnamon.

Make it more caffeinated:
Add a 1/2-1 teaspoon instant espresso powder or replace some of the water with brewed espresso.

it was so delicous :) i added a bit of peanut butter to it as well, it made it taste ten times better than the first time i made it. :)
averyheartsnutella in reply to averyheartsnutellaSep 24, 2012. 4:19 PM
i made it in a separate pan from the nutella because the peanut butter has peanut butter oil so it will separate the nutella from the milk if you make it in one pan
ChrysN (author) in reply to averyheartsnutellaSep 15, 2012. 4:10 PM
Peanut butter! That sound awesome, I will have to try that.

You do realise that nutella isn't vegetarian?.....
ChrysN (author) in reply to RachelEberleNov 25, 2011. 3:40 PM
I know there is milk in it, I still eat dairy.
Roshy10 in reply to ChrysNFeb 18, 2012. 3:18 PM
I just thought I would point out that nutela is vegetarian but not vegan. vegans will only eat something if it does not contain any thing from animals (so no dairy or meat) however vegetarians will eat dairy but not meat.
RachelEberle in reply to ChrysNNov 26, 2011. 2:09 AM
So do I, but the whey powder is non-vegetarian because animal rennet was used in it's making. The vegetarian society don't recognise it as vegetarian. A bit like cheeses which use animal rennet, unless you eat that sort of dairy too...just trying to help out.
Comicbookguy in reply to RachelEberleNov 26, 2011. 1:56 PM
Rennet is no longer collected from the stomachs or animals. They now have genetically engineered microorganisms that produce it, much like yeast is used to produced yogurt and beer. So while it is still technically an animal product it is a byproduct now.

You know what? I have 9 jars of Nutella in my cupboard by the stove, and right now I'm on a 2 apples / day diet (trying to get to 75 from 85..kg) so eventhough I droooled at this instructable, and wanted to try it so much I just have to drool more :(
ChrysN (author) in reply to BasDec 4, 2011. 6:10 PM
Good for you for resisting (if you saw how much fat was in a tablespoon if Nutella you'd be happy you didn't have any).
Ari05 says: Nov 26, 2011. 2:58 PM
This is delicious! Add a little peppermint extract to it and it makes a great Christmas time drink! :)
ChrysN (author) in reply to Ari05Nov 26, 2011. 5:48 PM
That sounds really good! Thanks for the suggestion.
Ezara says: Nov 21, 2011. 7:11 PM
I wasn't sure how this would turn out, but it was good! I added a bit of instant coffee as it was a little sweet for my taste buds.
Note: Microwave times strongly depend on your microwave. If I cooked mine that long, either the mug would crack or the drink would boil over. I did 1 minute first, and then 40 seconds after adding the nutella - worked out at a great temperature :)
ChrysN (author) in reply to EzaraNov 21, 2011. 10:18 PM
Thanks, I'll mention the microwave times above.

how long does it take for in the microwave so my tounge does not get burnt?
ChrysN (author) in reply to 35TimmyNov 19, 2011. 11:48 AM
If you follow the microwave times I gave above it shouldn't be too hot that you burn your tongue.

this was DELICIOUS
midsummermuse says: Nov 18, 2011. 11:17 AM
I'm sure it's better with milk, but I have Nutella and water... Off to try this now ;-)
midsummermuse in reply to midsummermuseNov 18, 2011. 2:10 PM
Ah I lied, I remember making coffee yesterday and only drinking a cup, so I used old cold coffee instead of water (sounds delicious, no?). While it is nothing fantastic, it's better than microwaving it and the nutella masks the bitterness. Waste not, want not. :-) I'll try it again another way soon, thanks for the idea!
tseemann says: Nov 17, 2011. 7:32 PM
I added in a touch of chai tea mix and some nesquick and topped with rediwhip. It is very good! Thanks for the tip!
one more thing, a couple small chunks of dark chocolate dropped in the mug is very good. The chocolate is dense enough that it stays at the bottom and then when the sweet hot chocolate is gone you get some bitter dark chocolate. ^_^
ChrysN (author) in reply to tseemannNov 17, 2011. 8:12 PM
That sounds wonderful!
tseemann in reply to ChrysNNov 17, 2011. 9:33 PM
I just made some more and used up the last of my rediwhip.... must get more!
I am someone who really improvises with cooking (I never follow a recipe exactly) and I have used nutella on salty wheat crackers and in cold drink mixes but it never occurred to me to mix it in with something hot. I'm glad you thought of it!

I'm definitely going to try this with almond or coconut milk!
radarovich says: Nov 17, 2011. 8:58 AM
I'm a milk girl myself...and I gotta say. OH YUMMM. so not what I expected. I used the 2 tbsp of Nutella and it tastes more nutty and less choco-lotty! Interesting and SO GOOD!
whiteoakart says: Nov 17, 2011. 8:56 AM
Yummmm.... Even better, replace the water with vanilla soy milk. Oh, I may have to do this when I get home tonight.
