Introduction: Opening That Beer, Many a Way...

About: A Northern Ireland based maker with a propensity to cause trouble and freshly constructed family.

Well as you may have guessed it's about opening beer, in many ways...

Regardless of what bumpus, rocketscientist and sunbanks say I'm not an alco...

Say you're having a BBQ and your steaks are just about to be flipped, oh no, there's no bottle openers handy and you need a drink...

Whatever will you do...

Step 1: The Pry Method...

This works with almost any solid object that's in any way lever shaped...

The pictures have examples of a lighter, a screwdriver, a bit of wood, oh you get the idea...

The secret to doing this is simple...

Wrap your hand around the bottle, stick you index finger out and put the corner of the object under the lid, put your index finger around the object and grip tightly while pulling the object down like a lever.

***How this works - Basically you are gaining a mechanical advantage but using the object as a lever, your index finger then acts as a fulcrum to pivot around...

Step 2: The Thump Method...

This one involves a corner and a beer, plus two working hands...

This is best done on the corner of a wood block of workbench, it'll mark wood, also if you're using a metal or concrete object be careful that the bottle doesn't break...

So take the beer and set it against the corner of the object so the cap is hanging on it. angle it a little.

Give it a good thump with the palm of your hand, the cap should pop of in one go, if it comes halfway replace beer like it was and just squeeze straight down on it, you can use this squeezing technique to open beer more safely against concrete and metal...

***How it works - Here your using kinetic energy much the same way as a hammer does, you build it up in the swing and transfer it to the bottle cap, forcing it off, rather than transferring energy slower like squeezing it...

Step 3: The Push Up Method.

This one involves a lighter or similar object, even a phone (at risk of sever scratching...) place the top of the object with the corner along the lip of the cap, take both hands and push up with your thumbs...

The cap should slowly pop off, hissing a bit first, this one really isn't recommended for shaken beer, it'll shoot out at you...

***How it works - This one is more an ergonomic advantage, where the object is there to give you something to push against effectively...

Step 4: Using a Hook of Some Sort...

You can use anything like a strong bit of wire or a good sized hook for this one, basically you wrap it under cap lip and pull using a handle of some sort...

Some people like to tie little hangman's nooses, I'll admit it's kinda funny...

***How it works - This one is again and ergonomic advantage, where you have something to pull on, however it can also be given a mechanical advantage by simply levering the handle away from you against something...

Step 5: The Empty Bottle Method.

This is essentially the same as the thump or squeezing down method but using an empty bottle instead...

Set the empty bottle down on the table, if it has a very round rim then flip it over, the bottom can be used...

Take the lip of the cap and put it in against the rim of the bottle, while holding the empty push down making sure the weight goes right down, you can get away with hitting the shatter-proof bottles but it's best to avoid thumping them...

***How it works - Basically the same as the wall method, using kinetic energy or giving you an ergonomic and mechanical advantage...

Step 6: Find the Bottle Opener at the End of It All...

Turns out it was in your pocket the whole time...

***How it works - You never suspect it to be hiding close by and it's natural to go back to look where you last where, pockets aren't biological instinct yet, but soon we will evolve with pockets, much like marsupials...

If you are looking for something to do with the empty bottles, anarchistasian and I collaborated on This little lamp think of it as a candle only less classy...
