Introduction: Operating the Manual Lathe
The following outlines basic operation and etiquette for milling parts on the manual lathe.
Step 1: Area and Machine Preparation
- Press the E-stop.
- Clean and clear the lathe.
- Secure the workpiece.
- Select and install the cutting tool.
- Calculate the RPM (speed) for your cutter and material.
- Use the handwheel to rotate the chuck to check for collisions.
- Turn the speed control to a low number.
- Lock the Quick lever into the forward position.
Step 2: Making the Cut
- Start the lathe.
- Release the E-Stop.
- Press start.
- Move the spindle speed range lever to high or low.
- Change the RPM to the calculated value.
- Move the cutting tool close to the desired starting point.
- Gently engage the cutting tool.
- Make the first cutting pass.
- This may be a good time to 0 the X or Z axis.
- Move the spindle speed range lever to the center to stop the spindle.
Step 3: Cleanup
- Press the E-stop.
- Remove the workpiece.
- Clean the lathe and the area nearby.
- Use brushes and a vacuum, not compressed air.
- Chips may be sharp; use a tool to remove them.
- Clean up any coolant spills.
- Put away tooling, drill bits and tools.
- Recycle scraps and put reusable pieces in the storage bin in the metal shop.
