Introduction: Origami Crane

This instruction guide will serve as an introduction to origami. It will teach the user the steps to making a paper crane. No previous experience is needed to follow this guide (although it will certainly help). All that is needed is the listed materials and a flat surface to work on.

Materials

Several square sheets of paper

Or

Several rectangular sheets of paper and Scissors

Note: Smaller paper means more difficult folds, so avoid excessively small paper. A good square size of 3 by 3 inches is ideal.

Optional: A ruler or straight edge to help make creases.

Step 1: Making Square Paper

If you don’t have square paper, then follow these preliminary instructions to quickly make some. If you already have square paper, then you are ready to start and can skip to the next step.

a. Fold any corner of the paper along the short edge of the paper.

Check: You should see the folded triangle with the rest of the paper forming a rectangle sticking out underneath.

b. Using the scissors, cut off the extra rectangle. You can discard the rectangular sheet.

c. Unfold the triangle. You are now ready to begin!

Step 2: Make Two Diagonal Creases.

1. Fold the top right corner to its opposite lower corner, make a crease, and then unfold.

2. Repeat part 1. for the top left corner

3. Flip over the entire sheet of paper

Check: When you are finished you should simply have a square with two diagonal creases.

Step 3: Make Two Additional Creases.

1. Fold the paper horizontally in half (top to bottom), make a crease, and then unfold

2. Fold the paper vertically in half (left to right), make a crease, and then unfold

3. Rotate the paper until one of the corners points towards you.

Check: When you are finished, you should have a diamond, with 4 creases.

Step 4: Make a Smaller Square.

1. Fold the top corner down to the bottom corner. Do not make any creases.

2. Fold the right corner down to the bottom corner. Do not make any new creases. The creases should already be made in the previous steps.

3.Flip over the entire paper.

4. Repeat part 2.

Check: When you are finished, you should have a smaller diamond that is several layers thick.

Step 5: Make Three New Creases.

This step makes the necessary creases to set up the next step.

1. Fold the right side in, so that it aligns with the center-line, and make a crease.

2. Repeat part 1 on the left side.

Check: It should now look like a kite.

3. Fold the top half of the kite down and make a crease.

4. Unfold the three previous folds so that it looks like a small square again.

5. Flip over the whole paper.

6. Repeat parts 1 through 4 again.

Step 6: Make a Slender Diamond.

1. Grab the top layer of paper at the bottom corner.

2. Slowly pull the bottom corner towards the top corner. It will look like a boat, with its two sides popping up.

3. Push down the two sides to make a diamond shape. Do not make any new creases. Only refold along creases made in previous steps.

Check: It should look like a slender diamond is on top of a small square.

4. Flip over the whole paper.

5. Repeat parts 1 through 3.

Step 7: Make a Slender Kite.

1. Fold the bottom right edge to the center-line and make a crease.

2. Fold the bottom left edge to the center-line and make a crease.

3.Flip over the entire paper.

4. Repeat parts 1 through 3.

Check: It should now look like a very slender kite.

Step 8: Make a Slender Kite With Ears.

1. Grab the top layer of folds on the right side of the paper.

2. Fold it along the center-line to the left edge. (This should be just like turning a page from right to left.)

Check: The overall slender kite shape should be unchanged.

3. Flip over the entire paper.

4. Repeat parts 1. and 2.

Check: It should still look like slender kite, but now with the two top halves being separated (like ears).

Step 9: Make the Bird's Body.

1. Grab the top layer of folds at the bottom corner of the paper and fold it up to the top corner. Make a crease.

2. Flip over the entire paper.

3. Repeat part 1.

Step 10: Make the Neck and Tail.

1. Grab the top layer of folds on the right edge and fold it to the left edge, along the center line. (This should be like turning a page from right to left.)

2. Flip over the entire paper.

3. Repeat part 1.

4. Grab the two small points at the top and pull them out.

Check: It should now look like a three pointed crown.

Step 11: Make the Head and Wings.

1. Grab towards the end of the right point.

2. While still grabbing the neck, pull down on the end to form the beak. (The end should invert its middle edge while folding.)

3. When the end is pointing slightly down, pinch the neck to make the crease.

4. Grab both sides of the middle point, and pull them apart.

Check: It should look like a bird.

Step 12: Finished!

You are finished!

Try practicing with different sizes and colors of paper.
