Another source of easy tote material is legs of worn-out pants.  cut them off just below the holes that appear at the knee, turn them inside out, sew up the frayed end, then turn them right side out after that.  You end up with a tote bag that is about one foot (30.5cm) by fifteen inches (38 cm) with a hemmed up mouth.
