Introduction: PC Mouse Robot

About: We are a group of Engineers, Tinkerers, Designers, Programers, and Nerds ! ---- and Since April 2011 We also have a Cupcake Maker

We decided that we wanted to have some Mouse Problems at the house, but we really dont like to deal with the whole "Bio Hazard" stuff so we had to make our own mouse problem out of a Computer Mouse!

You can leave us some feedback at our website at www.hm-innovations.com and view our other projects!

We made a little robot that used the Mouse "right and left bumber" as "feelers" and it actually evaded several objects around the house. Except for our dog :( this little guy had fun till it died to our dogs superior E Mouse Hunting skills and malevoulous Jaws :(

But I can say it was fun while it lasted, RIP Mr. Mini PC Mouse Robot

this is how it worked when the mouse ran into a wall one of the motors is stoped from spining which causes the other motor to take over and spin around and away from the obstacle. The happily continue onwards

This is our video on the project.

Step 1: Finding the Corpse

Okay the first thing you need is to find a mouse CHORD mouse it has to have a tail so were going to use the USB or Mouse Connection chord as a tail.

Once you find the mouse you want to use you need to open it up, do this by taking off the secret screws usually found under stickers or under the bottom mouse pads.

See the 3rd picture for the screw spots :P

Step 2: Stripping Down the Mouse

Okay so here is where we get freaky with our mouse, We need to strip the upper layer off the mouse to reveal the amazing Mouse Circuit

Remove the fly "scroll" wheel from the mouse by pulling back the tab and pulling the wheel upwards.

Then remove the USB connection Cable, its just a pull off connection so thats the easy thing.

Step 3: Identifying the Switches

Every mouse is different so you need to find and identify the button switches for the Left and the Right button switches.

We found the connections to be on the far ends of our mouse, were going to remember these connections for our soldering later on.

=)    <- thats a happy face :)

Step 4: Salvage Extra Parts

Salvage what ever you can from the mouse, The two EXTRA BRIGHT red LED's are a perfect example of our salvage parts :)

One of the LED's has an LED holder which looks awesome and you can poblably find something to use it on later for another project.  so SAVE IT! BE GREEN!

Step 5: Soldering Station

Place your board on the soldering station, if you dont have one, click here to learn how to make one!

www.instructables.com/id/Ultimate-Helping-HandsStation/

And solder the inner two connections to the switches togther. You will be creating a bridge between the two switches. We used a small jumper cable for this step.

Step 6: Soldering the Cables and Brains :)

We soldered a 9v battery holder to the outside of the switches, The polarity does not matter just make sure you stay consistent with your cables.

THen you need to solder 2 cables on the same connection as your battery these will be the extensions for your motor. Then place them through the small opening left behind from the Scroll wheel.

Next you need to solder 2 extra cables to the inner connection of the switches. The connector witht he jumper cable these extra cables will also be connected to your motors so you need to place them through your scroll wheel also.

Step 7: Working on the Torso

The interior bottom part of the mouse needs to be sanded down to remove any imperfections so the circuit can fit properly.

Once you have the circuit in place attach a battery and make sure that everything is fitting properly

Step 8: Adding the Tail and the Feet !

Your new little robot needs to have a tail and some sort of way for moving. So were going to take the old USB chord we removed from earlier and cut that about 6 inches from the top then adding it the rear of the mouse using hot glue.

We are then goign to use two small motors that we found in a very verry verrrry verrrrrrRRRY old typewriter style pc for children. They have a spring at the end of them and this will work as the feet for our little mouse. so we need to find a location for the feet.

Drill two small holes in the side of the bottom of the casing and fit the motors through the side of the shell.

Place the circuit back in the shell and then place the motors on the shell and hot glue the motors in place! and now your little dude can walk!.... or crawl.... or roll????

Step 9: ON and OFF Switch

Add an on and off switch to the little bot....

we felt like we had to give you an easy step slide cuz the next step is a bit difficult for the Novice people :P

Step 10: Wiring the Brain

This is how the wiring is going to work..

You have a left motor on the left bumper.

The right motor is in the right bumber!

Take the NEGATIVE lead of the BATTERY and attach that to the RIGHT MOTOR's POSSITIVE lead

Take the POSSITIVE lead of the BATTERY and attach that one to the LEFT MOTOR'S POSSITIVE lead

Now take the LEFT BUMPER green wire and attach that to the RIGHT MOTOR NEGATIVE lead

and take the RIGHT BUMPER green wire and attach that to the LEFT MOTOR NEGATIVE lead.

Hard enought? if the motors are going the wrong way just switch the polarity on the motors and that fixes the direction of movement of the motor.

Step 11: Clothing Your Little Bot

okay so youre almost done, all you need now is give your little bot some shoes! so to do this you need to add some hot glue to the end of the motor ends and turn that into a small round ball for extra traction.

Then place the top cover on your mouse and give it some whiskers! and thats it, you are done with this beautiful creation, and thanx to us now you have some serious mouse problems :)

take care and as always be creative with our projects, you can find so many different ways of doing something like this we hope to see yours soon!
