SOLAR PANELS CAN BE VERY DIVERSE WITH A LARGE SELECTION FOR POWER USAGE, THE ONE I HAVE HERE IS ONLY CRANKING OUT 12VDC @ 70WATTS. COURTESY OF THE U.S. ARMY. LATER ABOUT POWER CONSUMPTION AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED.

Step 2: COLLECTING RECYCABLE MATERIALS

Picture of COLLECTING RECYCABLE MATERIALS
COLLECTING SCRAP WOOD FOR PORTABLE CART, YOU CAN BUILD YOUR CART OUT OF BETTER MATERIALS LIKE ALUMINUM OR WATER PROOF ENCLOSURES OR SUPPORTS. I BUILT MINE OUT OF SCRAP WOOD COLLECTED FROM A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IN THE ARMY....AT NO COST TO ME...HA HA!!

Step 3: HARDWARE NEEDED

Picture of HARDWARE NEEDED
HERE I HAVE COST FREE PARTS FROM THE U.S. ARMY NOT IN USE, AND EVENTUALLY WILL FINDS ITS WAY TO THE FIRE PIT..MOST OF WHICH YOU CAN BUY AT YOUR LOCAL HARDWARE STORE......AT THE BOTTOM A RECHARABLE 12VDC DEEP CYCLE LEAD, ACID FREE BATTERY SLOW DRAIN. 3 OR 4 CASTOR WHEELS WITH BRAKE LEVER, I USED THREE. 1 DC TO AC POWER INVERTER, 12VDC IN-120VAC OUT...CHEAP TO BUY AT WALMART...1 MINI CHARGE REGULATOR TO PREVENT BATTERY VOLTAGE GOING TO SOLAR PANEL....2 DOOR HINGES WITH SHEET METAL SCREWS.......ALL THE ELECTRICAL WIRE AND CONNECTORS COLLECTED AND STRIPED FROM BROKEN EQUIPMENT LIKE GAS POWERED GENERATORS...HA HA!!

Step 4: BATTERY TYPE

Great instructable; Nice n' clear and easy to understand; .... and not for nothin' because it could be that I'm in my 40's and have glaucoma, but I do not mind the capital letters at all; much easier to read that way, ..... these instructables are pretty much instruction manuals and blueprints on how to build something.... not an an early 90's era chat room; so I'm not 100% sure that old AOL chat rules apply to instruction manuals. not to mention blueprints tend to be in all caps most of the time, so the caps-lock being on works fine for me. ..... just sayin' . either way, this is a good instructable. I dig it with or without caps.

very nice but u could do 1 thing if u didnt scure the solar pannel very good put 1 more support on it and make a water proof comtain for eletrical stuff
like some information this did work for you ? love information on this ok? mes oe in espiritwild09@aol.com or wolfthuner68#yahoo.com

holy crap leave the dude alone so he wrote it in caps. maybe he did it so it was easier to read. I wish I could buy stuff from the army... well your army anyways...
Derin liggy5 years ago
It's actually harder to read in all-caps.
drzeke Derin2 years ago
not for me
cid2323 liggy4 years ago
whatever
It's doing more than just prevent the power floating back. For that a diode would be enough. It also controlls the charging voltage etc. That enhences the lifespan of the battery.

Speaking as one who's vision has deteriorated past the length of my arm....I DON'T MIND CAPS AT ALL. I can see them (and bold print) much better. He did not claim to be a "professional" writer , you people are not his editors nor did invite you to be. He was generous enough to share his idea ....and you are RUDE (must feel akin to being pecked to death by ducks!). GOOD JOB BRIAN, THANK YOU FOR SHARING.

apparently, you did something wrong, cause your shift key broke...

Nice instructable, but please next time don't use CAPS all the way through! It's very tiresome to read.
cid2323 pless844 years ago
yup.....was trying to hurry....we got bombed while I was trying to hurry with it.....

Please don't write in caps. It hurts my brain
cid2323 shive554 years ago
was not paying attention to the CAP thing....sorry..
seriously...

Great instructable, very complete, and I particularly liked the idea of putting it on a cart. Very nicely done and with lots of thought to cheap parts. Not to harp on about it, but seriously, dude: say no to all caps. My ears hurt from reading, and that's a hard feat to accomplish.
cid2323 erosser4 years ago
yea! just in a hurry to finish the typing thing.....sorry about caps...change my account to cid2323...

ABOUT THE CAPS. IF YOU DON'T TYPE VERY WELL IT IS MUCH EASIER AS YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HITTING THE SHIFT KEY AND EVERYTHING COMES OUT CORRECT. WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO BE SO FREAKIN PICKY. EXCELENT JOB ON THE STRUCTABLE. TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT PEOPLE THAT HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO THAN BE CRITICAL OF OTHER PEOPLES EFFORT.
YEAH ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DONT USE GRAMMAR I MEAN WHO CARES ABOUT GRAMMAR ANYWAY ITS NOT LIKE IT ACTUALLY MATTERS PLUS ITS NOT LIKE IT SEEMS LIKE YOURE YELLING OVER THE INTERNET, I MEAN WHO WOULD EVER THINK THAT I MEAN COMMON? EVERYONE KNOWS CAPS IS THE BEST WAY TO COMMUNICATE LIKE IN REAL LIFE WHEN YOU YELL ALL THE TIME IT MAKES YOU SOUND SMART :P

But other than the caps, great instructable! I'm curious where you got the solar panel, you mentioned something about it being US Army Surplus?
(and really, caps DO make it harder to read)
ok I get it, enough about the CAP thing,......anyway, the panel was going straight to the burn pit so I thought  I would build something.......and yes I forgot to take the caps offfffffff
IT AINT MY INSTRUCTABLE.  TRY TO GROW UP A LITTLE. IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY CAPS JUST DON'T READ IT.  I CAN'T BELIEVE I JUST BROUGHT MYSELF DOWN TO YOUR LEVEL...
I second all the other sentiments here as it relates to the project. Great instructalbe. I built a smaller scale and now I have this to help me build a larger one.

As for the caps issue, it's just a clash of the cultures that the Internet is (has been) forcing us as human beings to deal with. Some will adapt to new etiquette in the online culture and others won't. There's no "etiquette" police that I'm aware of...yet.
HEY! LEAVE THE KID ALONE! EVERYONE KNOWS THAT ONCE YOU TURN ON CAPSLOCK, IT IS FOREVER IRREVERSIBLE! THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO ME!
I WASN'T RAGGING ON HIM.  COMMENT WAS FOR PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO THAN BE A NIT PICKER...
what are the limitations on this? exactly how much power can you get out of this continually and in peaks?
how many devises can this operate? how many batteries can you charge with this to provide power continually at night or without light?
how many of these will it take to meet the power needs of the average home? I'm just curious to know this info so as to consider all possibilities for application.
There are many variables that will greatly affect the operation of a solar system, that would include panel wattage, battery, voltage regulators and power converters.    Sunny or cloudy days...power consumption...three ways you can for sure have constant power without failure are:  HYDRO, WIND, and SOLAR.

If you are lucky enough to be around all three feeding that constant energy into a home with one or more....then you are golden.

There are many good systems out there.  It all depends what applications you want to use them for....    I changed my account to cid2323 due to the fact I forgot my original......SORRY

Why did you attach the solar panel to a cart that can not be used outside in harsh weather or moved on anything other than a flat surface? Also, why in the name of god did you use all-caps?, they make you seem far less credible.
was just bored by keeping it simple, and sorry about the CAP thing...didnt realize I had it in caps was in a hurry to finish....

How did you get the parts from the army?
jackson88 (author)  Drop Top5 years ago
currently in the army...you can get stuff from army surplus stores, you just have to look if not try the army DRMO I think there is one in texarcana TX...look it up on the net.....I dont have the DRMO web site to give, just type it in the search engine
Do you know the FSG and the FSC number for the solar collector?  Or do you have the NIIN number?  Thanks, Ken.
 Easy on the caps.
Your capitalization is obnoxious.
teslafan1004 years ago
Please don't keep have you capitals on in the whole instrucables its kinda weird.
clutz4 years ago
A lead acid battery is the opposite of "lead free and acid free" as mentioned in the intro.  I was intrigued to see what type of battery was used and dissapointed to see a lead acid battery when you had promissed the opposite.
cid2323 clutz4 years ago

I took a pic of the wrong battery....the lead free battery was under the table...

In all seriousness, the capital letter aspect is NOT criticizing you, just something that you did.  Those talking about the "naysayers whining and griping" need to understand that while it's a wonderful idea and 'ible, it's very frustrating to read capital letters.
