Instructables
Upon arriving at college, I realized that I forgot my cork board back at home. Instead of having my parents mail it to me or even :gasp: going a whole term without a cork board, I decided to make a cheap, geekified version of my own! For less than $10, I made an eye-catching art piece that also has a functional purpose!

Step 1: Tools and Materials

Tools you will need:
-Scissors or box-cutter
-Tape measure or ruler
-Markers
-Straight edge (if you don't have a ruler handy)

Materials:
- Cork board tiles -- I bought a pack of 4 on Amazon for $6.79
- Tape or other means of sticking the boards to the wall

Step 2: Come up with a design!

Pac-man is only one of many designs you could put on here. When choosing what you want your cork board to be shaped like, keep in mind that the image cannot be too detailed, because it will be too hard to cut out (unless you have a laser cutter, in which case, go for it!). Also keep in mind that it is a lot easier to cut out straight pieces than round ones.

Once you have chosen a design, create an image of it using your image editor of choice; I used GIMP photoshop for my design. To make it easier to transfer the design onto the cork board, scale the image so that the longest side is 12" (or whatever length your cork board is.)

Step 3: Put the design on the boards!

Once I had created my templates, I reset the rulers in GIMP to show inches instead of pixels (see picture below). Using the templates as a guide, I then used a straight edge and a tape measure to draw the image on the cork board.  To do this is very simple; For example: if the first corner on the image is 1.5" from the left in the image, then  make a mark 1.5" from the left on the board. If your design is simple enough, you can make all the marks on two edges of the board, then use a straight edge to draw the lines in.

I think I'm going to do four different arcade games. One of the ghosts, the space invaders alien, and the Galaga ship.. Any other suggestions for my fourth one?

This would make for an interesting kanban board system.

Love this idea man, really creative.
really awesome, but couldn't you make it rounder???

I could have, but I am absolutely terrible at precision cutting and am not steady at all; it wouldn't have turned out very nicely. Instead I decided to go with the original pac-man graphics, making it easier to cut and still staying true to the game.

So cool ^^ "If you do not study.. YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

Best motiviational poster ever, it's hanging on my ceiling when I look up thinking "why do I have to study?" it's the first thing I see :p

Anyway great ible, Perhaps I'll give it a go with a space invaders design :)

Thanks! I wasn't sure anyone would catch what motivational poster that was; it is one of my favorites as well :)

you could probably use the extra "pixels" that are left over to make the bits that Pacman eats. Just for style.

I thought about that, but then I realized I didn't have enough room on my wall :(
I think these are great but I feel as though you should make Pac Man's mouth flat like this < instead os step shaped. Great job. I'm going to recycle my old boards into The Link insignia.
IIRC, in the original, it was pixelated
Oh. I guess I should play the original. Again great Instructable.

Ahahaha, this is very cool! Imagine all of the possibilities... space invaders... mario... Lol. Anyway, I give it five stars :D
I was actually thinking about making space invaders myself lol

That is officially awesome. It's official. 5 stars!

P.S. I gave it 5 stars, but it seems the rating system is messed up. I was the first person to rate it, I clicked on 5 stars, and it went to 3.09 stars. Weird.

I may be wrong, but I think Instructables starts everything at a neutral "3" rating, and weights votes from there. It would help keep vote-spamming down. dominator24, you have solved my problem of what to do with 4 cork message boards I'd previously used as a pinboard for an RC balsa aircraft's construction. I never thought of this...although now I sort of want to do Space Invaders or Moon Patrol...
Yeah, I would think that too, but when I voted 5 stars and it went to 3.09, not just 3. I think it has been posted as a bug report before, and I'm sure it's a known problem. Whatever.
Oh no, I meant the instructable starts at a rating of 3, and every vote raises or lowers a weighted percentage based on some formula. When I voted, it went from 3.29 to 3.5. I know of a few sites that have a ranking system where higher-ranked members, when voting on a post, will raise the stars a higher percentage (maybe from 3 to 3.5) than a low-rank member (3 to 3.15). Now I am curious how Instructables does their system, though.

Then white board behind it OR use black board paint.
