Is the use of a breadboard just for purposes of expansion at a later time? Could you use a printed board to save some space?

For a beginner, or pre-beginner, really. Do you have an estimate of the total cost of this project? It's very beautiful.

Really cool, I like the idea of using the breadboard in the final product since it it can be used the way it is intended or changed into something completely different - or just expanded - like into a Pandora alarm clock / coffee starter or something.
