I made a paper claw a few months ago on instructables, and that design wasn't very good, it was small, it had rubber bands on it so the outside didn't look too great and it couldn't pick stuff up. I knew that I could make it better, the way of how it moved and was put together was not created until then, and I so far haven't seen any claws that use a design like this. This claw is based loosely off that design by that it has the same way how it is held together, every thing else is different and better.

This new design is bigger, it can now pick stuff up,and it uses a different way of making the claw open and close, so there is no external parts except the claw segments. It could also be made to suite to what you need, metal for heavy duty, it being longer to pick up stuff for the disabled, plastic for the cost and strength, or any thing else that is flat that you have laying around!

The first 5 people to make it will win a patch!
The first person to make this will win a 3 month membership!
InfiniTTTy already made it!(he messaged me before every one else)
And the other 4 people to make this will get a patch!
dj-party made it second! Derek Scott Customs made it third! Potatoman1234 made it forth!

Here is the video:

Well, anyways, to the instructable!

Wow! Unfortunately, someone private messaged me that they made it, before you, but I am still going to give you a patch!
Can you post a video? I wonder how it moves so smoothly, how thick is the metal?

Great job!

I dont see anything
InfiniTTTy says: Jul 7, 2011. 12:40 PM
I build it! Very cool. I should have used thicker card stock for the inner assembly - it's a little flimsy in my version. Maybe I should have doubled everything up instead of just the claws. I also used paperclips which I think are were a little too think which made everything a little more tricky to build. Pics are here: https://picasaweb.google.com/rick.mccaskill/PaperClaw20 Thanks for the instructable!

Wow, good job! The patch is coming up!
And if you finish the portal gun you have to post a picture! :)

I just want you to know that I am going to attempt to make this today with 24 kids, ages 7-14. We'll see how it goes!

Thanks for such good details!

dombeef (author) in reply to radiolorisMar 10, 2012. 6:46 PM
Good luck!
And your welcome!
radioloris in reply to dombeefMar 20, 2012. 9:27 AM
Well, it proved to be too difficult for one 2 hour class period, lol. I ended up finishing them for all the 7-9 year olds, and only doing the middle part for the older kids. I had them specifically look at how they were put together and said I wanted them to think of ways to make their own versions out of different materials or sizes.

I called this their prototype. :)
dombeef (author) in reply to radiolorisMar 20, 2012. 6:24 PM
Did you take pictures? I would love to see how they did!

how do you send patches?
dombeef (author) in reply to or_ford98Jan 18, 2012. 2:33 PM
You have to be pro, then you get a limited amount of patches to send out.

Hi,
I was wondering on the paper claw 2.0, how do you make the claw contract some more so that it can pick up smaller objects?
Rybka30 says: Aug 19, 2011. 2:27 AM
i think you are paperman :D great instructable :D

Thanks!
evindrews says: Jul 25, 2011. 10:38 AM
Please help! On this step, how did you connect the third piece? I could probably figure it out , but it would use alot of improvising and i'm afraid of messing it up.....
dombeef (author) in reply to evindrewsJul 25, 2011. 10:59 AM
Oh, you are making it, Good luck, you are almost done!

Ok, for the third piece you will have to "wing it", just try to bend the wire so it is tight enough, and push it into the extra hole. It is fine it it is a kinda loose, if it is too tight it wouldn't move very well.

When you are done make sure to post a comment on the first step and I will give you a patch!
thing 2 says: Jul 13, 2011. 9:13 PM
I want to make a long one for sneaking or whatever. I wonder if I could make one that will bend or have a kink in it to pick up stuff easier.
dombeef (author) in reply to thing 2Jul 14, 2011. 7:01 AM
I waas thinking of making one like that for the cardboard contest that is happening right now
thing 2 in reply to dombeefJul 14, 2011. 10:51 AM
Cool.
Propslap says: Jul 12, 2011. 5:18 PM

Will it blend
dombeef (author) in reply to PropslapJul 12, 2011. 5:56 PM
It can pick stuff up, and I know the youtube channel, it will blend.
pietzeekoe says: Jul 9, 2011. 2:34 PM
Make a portal/gravity gun with it
dombeef (author) in reply to pietzeekoeJul 9, 2011. 3:08 PM
That was the original plan with it, but I made my measurements too small, I might make another instructable with the portal gun, it might be my halloween costume

uberdreww says: Jul 7, 2011. 4:34 PM
if you make the main body like an oval it would almost look like the portal gun
dombeef (author) in reply to uberdrewwJul 7, 2011. 6:38 PM
As I was making the plans a few weeks ago(i was really busy and I forgot about it) I was trying to make this for a replica of the gravity gun from the half life series. If you were to do it you would have to make it like this and then cover it with an oval like cylinder.
cloudifornia says: Jul 7, 2011. 3:15 PM
Very interesting, but how is this used as a kid's toy? I'm older than duct tape and I just don't get it.
dombeef (author) in reply to cloudiforniaJul 7, 2011. 3:46 PM
It is fun to play around and pick stuff up with it, at least my sister likes it, she plays around with it.
If it was longer be put over a kids arm so the kid could play and make believe they were a robot, etc
jeremyzoo says: Jul 7, 2011. 8:08 AM

And thanks!
Derek Scott Customs says: Jul 7, 2011. 8:12 AM
you only show 3 claws but with the pdf it has 6. do we double them?
owar in reply to Derek Scott CustomsJul 7, 2011. 8:16 AM
Last part in the Step 3:

"For the claw segment, after you glue it on and cut it out, glue two pieces together to make it stronger."

Cheers!
InfiniTTTy says: Jul 6, 2011. 4:45 PM
I found the bending of the paper clips to be easier with two pairs of needle nose pliers. One to hold the 1 inch paper clip piece and the other to bend the 90 degree angles.
blackoutneji says: Jul 5, 2011. 1:46 PM
Can I make it out of another material and still get pro membership? i can use a modified design of this for my homemade claw machine!
dombeef (author) in reply to blackoutnejiJul 5, 2011. 1:53 PM
It depends if you post a comment with it first!

And yeah, I was thinking that anyone could modify it to their need, if it is metal for it being strong or left over plastic, I am even able to change the claw design if I need to pick up different objects, This is just the basic one

ClockworkDragonfly in reply to dombeefJul 5, 2011. 9:18 PM
I'm actually considering making one based on your design in reinforced leather as a costume element for a LARP. It really is a very simple & adaptable design with a lot of possibilities.
dombeef (author) in reply to ClockworkDragonflyJul 6, 2011. 6:49 AM
You should use a base inside the leather, it might not be strong enough.
ClockworkDragonfly in reply to dombeefJul 6, 2011. 7:16 AM
It will all depend on what cut of leather I use (for example sole bends for shoemaking vs saddle skirting) and exactly how large/heavy the objects I want to be able to lift will be. The whole costume is still in the planning stages, so I don't know that last bit just yet. That will determine if I will be able to use raw veg tan leather (which is much more stiff and structurally sound than what you may be thinking of), if I will need to harden it (via the hot water hardening process I use when I make armour), or build a frame for the inside.
dombeef (author) in reply to ClockworkDragonflyJul 6, 2011. 9:46 AM
Ok, when you do make sure to post a comment with a picture for a patch!

Great job! This is a very nice design. What i like is that the design can be easily changed to accomodate other materials to produce this out of. Keep up the good work!

rimar2000 says: Jul 4, 2011. 7:09 PM
Nice design. Nowyou could do it metallic or wooden, for utility use.
dombeef (author) in reply to rimar2000Jul 4, 2011. 7:26 PM
Thanks!

I was thinking, if I won the Toy Contest I could make plans so I could make it better and stronger in plastic. It would also be able to be scaled up and down easier. But it is very unlikely, other instructables are way higher in views and ratings, and some one even made a 3d plotter out of legos!
