Introduction: Pencil Holder Using Empty Duct Tape Rolls

About: Although I love all art in general, some of my favorites include photography, constructing practical stuff out of duct tape, and sewing up a storm. Before buying something I think twice about it, then usually …
Empty duct tape rolls: everyone has them! They are something you just don't know what to do with, but decide to shove in a box and save for later, because you just know you will find some way to use them, eventually. Well, here is a chance for you to take those empty rolls and put them to use! In this instructable I will show you how to make a gorgeous pencil holder for your desk, using two of those empty rolls. It is a fun instructable to make, and the result can be used every day.

Materials:
  • 2 empty duct tape rolls
  • 1 roll of decorative duct tape (I used polka dots)
  • 1 roll of a contrasting solid color duct tape (I used green)
  • Pencils and pens to fill the holder when you are done!
Time Needed: 10-15 minutes
Skill Level: Easy

Step 1: Stack and Tape

First, take 2 empty duct tape rolls and stack them. Rip off a strip of decorative duct tape the length of one circumference around an empty roll. Then stick it, making sure the tape is covering the crack where the two rolls meet.

Step 2: Tape the Whole Thing

Now, tape the entire outside of the holder with the decorative duct tape. (To make it easy on you, actually you only need two strips of the circumference of the duct tape roll, since there are two stacked).

Step 3: Make the Top Rim

To make the rim for the top of the holder, rip a piece of solid color duct tape about the length of the circumference of the empty roll. Stick the piece with just a little bit of it showing on the outside, then fold it over and stick it on the inside. Make sure it covers the whole rim.

Step 4: Make the Bottom

To make the bottom, first turn the pencil holder upside down (the rim facing downward). As you did with the rim, wrap a strip of solid duct tape, barely showing, over the outside, ONLY this time with the tape STICKY SIDE OUT. Then, fold it into the middle, and start covering the middle of the bottom with strips of duct tape sticky side out.

Once that is done, begin putting normal (sticky side in) strips over the middle pieces, which are sticky side outs. Then, make a rim with a piece of sticky side in (normal) tape, using the same method as before with the top rim. Fold it onto the middle, and the bottom is done! If this doesn't make sense (I know it is hard with all these sticky outs and ins), just look at the pictures for help.

Flip the holder over to right side up.

Step 5: Fill With Pencils

You are done! Fill the pencil holder with pencils and pens, and set it on your desk to admire it. This also makes a good gift to a friend or family member. Enjoy your pencil holder!
