Introduction: Perfect the Magic Mesh Hands-Free Screen Door

The dogs always want to be on the patio, but they get upset if you lock them out. Leaving the door open lets in bugs so what is the solution? As seen on TV: it is "Magic Mesh". Of course, this product is not perfect. We found there were enough magnets and they are strong enough but the mesh was just a little too long and some weight in the bottom of the mesh could make the screen door even better.

You will need:
Magic Mesh, or some other magnetic screen door
Sewing Pins
A Sewing Machine
Pennies (for weights)
Thread to sew with

Step 1: Install Mesh

Install you mesh according to the box instructions. *Sorry I did not get a before picture* Fold up a little bit of the mesh so that with the weights installed the mesh will just sit on the floor, not drag or float above the floor.

Step 2: Sewing the Mesh

Essentially we are making pockets for the pennies; if you just sew a hem the weights could slide and bunch up in one spot. Sew the edge of the folded up fabric.

Step 3: Making a Pocket

With the needle down, lift your presser foot and rotate the mesh 90 degrees. Sew the top of the pinned up fabric until you reach the first dark line. *if your product does not have these nifty lines you will have to measure and mark the spacing of the pockets.

Step 4: Add the Weights

With the needle down, slide a penny into the pocket and push it against the side stitching.

Step 5: Closing the Pocket

Now lift the pressure foot and rotate your mesh 90 degrees IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AS BEFORE. The majority of the mesh will be facing you. Press your reverse, otherwise called "back stitch" button, and stitch in reverse to the folded edge. Release the reverse button and stitch normally to the edge of the pinned up fabric.

Step 6: Repeat

Continue steps #3 - #5, sewing the top of the pocket, insert a penny, and sew the side of the pocket until you reach the end of the mesh. Close the hem edge.

Step 7: Admire Your Handy Work!

See how the pockets stop the pennies from pooling at one end of the mesh? Evenly distributed weight is your friend! The weight of the pennies helps to keep the mesh together when the wind blows and assists the magnets in reattaching when the screen is opened. Happy puppy=happy owner :)
