Wow! I love the ideas...lol Back in our 40s, my husband and I were strapped for space in our apartment so we made a queen bunk from 2x4s using the metal strap and corner pieces to put it together. We wanted it portable and easy to take down and together without worrying about pulling nails. I set the height at what a work bench would be when we cut the wood as later I planned to transfer the bunk into a work bench for garage or cellar when we moved from our tiny space.
When we added the box and mattress, we just had enough head space for clearance into bed kneeling or sitting up. So the dimentions worked out perfectly and it gave me space to start sorting and packing boxes we just shoved out of the way that were not being used. I wish I still had the pattern to make bunk beds out of two sheets of plywood. That was a fun project.
