Step 4 Installing Doom

Now that you've got the Rockbox firmware ready to boot, you need to install the Doom game files to be able to play.

- Create a folder named "doom" under the ".rockbox" directory. So now you have /.rockbox/doom/

- Download the rockdoom.wad and place it in the doom folder.

- Take your doom wad files and place it there too. I can't tell you where to get them, but it won't be difficult to find. You can download the shareware version to start playing, or give freedoom a try.

Wad List:

• doom1.wad: Doom (Shareware)
• doom.wad: Doom
• doomu.wad: Doom Ultimate
• doom2.wad: Doom 2 - Hell on Earth
• plutonia.wad: Doom 2 - Plutonia Experiment
• tnt.wad: Doom 2 - TNT - Evilution

To start playing, boot from the rockbox firmware and from the main menu go to Plugins>Games>doom. Once there, choose the game wad file from the Game menu and select Play Game to start.

Controls:

• Forward - Menu
• Left - Left
• Right - Right
• Shoot - Play
• Open - Menu
• ESC - Hold switch
• Weapon - Select

Hello, I did everything you said to do, but during the last step (Installing Doom) I didn't know whether to keep the file compressed or not. I tried playing Doom with the folder both compressed and extracted and both times when I selected the "doom" file from Rockbox on my Ipod it said "Missing base WAD". Is there a file I forgot to download or something?

I like the way you've explained all the steps. Very educative. But for all those who have problems getting the wad files or loading rockbox things are made easier (copy & paste-practically) at the following site. Just download the file, unzip and read the simple instructions:

LOL did you even read the first paragraph, and no it wont work because you cant get rock box on it due to the higher encryption levels and due to the lack of time and interest.

is it possible to download a different game other than doom (mario bros,frogger,snake,etc.) for kids?

Rockbox comes with rockboy - a Game Boy emulator - so you can have Super Mario, Zelda and all the other Game Boy games. But the emulator isn't really good, so you may have problems with the frame rate, and the controls are generally horrible until you manually set them.

hey, i got as far as downloading the doomwad. I got the rockbox to work, but when I tried to download the doomwad, it said to find a program, I looked and found google video. It didnt work. Everytime I try to download the doomwad from anywhere it shows up as a google video player file. I cannot ufo it to my knowledge. got any ideas?
