I know this has been done before, but I thought I'd add my $.02 and make one my way. After looking at a lot of these survival kits I realized that they were missing a lot of things, and adding useless weight.
Step 1: Materials
For this kit you will need most of these
-Leatherman/ other multool
-Lock back knife (leatherman c301)
-Lighter (Zippo works great)
-Magnifying glass lens
-Matches (wax coated ones work best)
-First aid materials (Bandaids, alcohol wipes)
-Tape (Medical- 3M transpore)
-Bag (1 gallon zip lock style)
Step 2: Wire
Wrap the wire inside the altoids can as shown in the picture.
Wire can be use to fix cars, hold parts in place, hold a splint together, hold cans over a fire, and so much more.
Step 3: Tape (3M transpore)
Tape can be used to hold things together, and to wrap wounds it also can be used to waterproof stuff.
Step 4: String and Needle
String and a needle can be used to sew clothing, and also if you injure yourself you can use it to stitch yourself up.
Step 5: Razor blades
Razor blades are used to cut stuff too delicate or small for the knife. You can also use them to do rudimentary surgery if you injure yourself (don't forget to sterilize it with an alcohol wipe).
Step 6: Firecracker
These are a great attention getter. Unfortunately at the time I only have one. In an emergence go to the highest point you can find and light one off there. This is best done when there are other people or planes and helicopters in the area.
Step 7: Flint
Use flint as your last resort to start a fire or light a firecracker. If you have a zippo use that to make it much easier to spark. If not use the file on your leatherman.
Step 8: First aid
In addition to the tape keep band-aids, and alcohol wipes. You might also want to bring some basic medicines. Survival tip: Willow is natural aspirin. Boil it in water and drink it and it will work just as well as taking an aspirin pill.
