I have a bit of a passion for building unusual computer cases and have spent many years trying to come up with different types of designs. I have always wanted to make a full size R2D2. Combining my desire to make a full size R2D2 and computer modding resulted in this build. At the time I really had no idea how to make an R2D2 and did not even have a full set of plans so much of what I did was guess work The R2 is made from wood and cardboard with the dome and ceiling mirror I got of ebay. The LED are mainly christmas tree lights modified to run of a 24v system. Both the LED's and computer are mains powered. The finish and paintwork are very crude, mainly because I did not want to spend much money.
If I had known at the beginning where this Droid making adventure would have ended, and eventually cost, I probably would have never started. . The R2 took about six months to make although half way through the build I started to build Emy, my first full size mobile Droid.
What I had decided at the beginning was that this R2 would not move and that it would be a static computer case., although I wanted to make the dome and periscope radio controlled, mainly just to see if I could do it.
The spec for the computer is very basic but is fully functional as a working computer, intact it is still working fine to this very day sitting in my office at work. R2 has a small 5" built in screen and wireless keyboard and mouse senders onboard. There are lots and lots of LED's, as it gives it a great glow in the dark look. The periscope and dome are both radio control and there is a sound reactive sound system built in. My two later Droids, Emy and Zoe would be a thousand times more sophisticated, however, this build was the first.
