T3-E1. Old republic Droid

For a full build log check out : http://www.podpadstudios.co.uk

Ok, here we go, my latest build. I started this build five weeks ago. The plan is to complete it for a large Sci-fI event in April 2013.
I am going to post the full build blog here as well as on my main website, www.podpadpstudios.co.uk.
This is not a step by step as I don't really work like that, I will simply provide photos showing the build progression. As soon as the build goes mobile I will get some videos posted on my Youtube channel.

I have wanted to build one of these Droids for some time now but never really go around to it. It is a relatively simple build, however, there are a few major complexities like the head movement and movement in the front legs. After downloading the plans for the T3-M4 I have added a few modifications. My T3-E1 will be a bit larger than the plans state as I want to put some serious motors onboard. I am going to use some powerful wheel chair motors with 12" wheels allowing this Droid to move over any surface. I mainly want to use this Droid in outside events as I also want it to be fully weather proof. It will have my normal mass of LED's and I am going for a partial cut away design a bit like my R11:E1. I am going fairly hi tech with onboard router, IP webcam, motion tracking head movement .
Specs will include:
D.E.SabreTooth Dual 25x2 ESC
D.E SyRen 25 ESC for head
Standard 14v cordless drill, the motor will be used to drive the head.
A fair few 15kg Torque servos.
Two 24v,  7.5Amp geared wheel chair motors.
Two 33 Amp SLA batteries
Lots and lots of LED's.

The head mechanism is very important in this build as it will add to the overall builds character. When people interact with the T3 the head movement will add a real personality. Getting the fluidity in the movement will be a real challenge, especially if the servos i am using are not up to the task. At 15kg of torque, they should be ok but until I build the final mechanism and test it I will not know. The weight of the final head should be well supported by the central universal joint which is nice and chunky. I will try very hard to keep the weight down on the head as much as I can to keep the final movement fluid and fast.
The front articulated arm will be of a slightly different design as I want to build a water spray system into this as well as a compressed gas system, should be fun designing this.
I decided not to go with the moving shoulders as I quite like the seated look plus keeping the frame ridged will make the whole build much, much stronger. As I mentioned before the rear wheels are 12" and will offer outstanding of road performance, however the larges casters I could get in the front feet where about 100mm. This might prove to be a problem, however, I am not sure how i will solve this if it is. i could fit omni ball casters but I have never got on with the cheaper ones and the high tech ones are a bit expensive.

23rd December 2012 Update.

I have got a fair bit further with the T3 build. It is now officially called a T3:E1. I decided on the colour and will go for a Satin Black with a hint of aqua where the metal is rubbed down. The droid will have an overall distressed look with plenty of rust and peeling metal. I am currently spending most of my time priming, filling and sanding bodywork, a process that takes forever, however, the final results will be worth it. I have started on the electronics board and other bits and pieces including the servo systems to control the main eye and arm. All it has done here in the UK for the last three weeks is rain so my progress on applying the primer is very slow at the moment as the paint takes forever to dry.

3rd January 2013 Update

A massive amount of work has been completed on my T3 over the last two weeks due to the fact that I have been on holiday over the Christmas break. The T3:E1 is now mobile and certainly has masses of power due to the over the top motors. Moving over very rough surfaces will certainly not be an issue with this droid, the only negative is the slightly smaller 100mm wheels at the front that I had to go with due to limitations of space. I will get some video uploaded as soon as i can to show the movement. I am now working on the details which as I found with my last two Droid builds takes all the time. My aim is still April 2013 as my deadline for the completion of the build ready for a local Sci Fi show.
The colour changed and I have eventually gone with a Satin black with a fake carbon fibre look. It came about by accident however the final look does work very well in 'the flesh'.

7th January 2012 Update

I have added a fair few more picture showing a number of updates and extras added. The compressed gas spray system and water spray are now added as is the updated charging system. CID, as he is now called has had his first run outside on rough ground and did ok although I have had a few problems with the front wheels. One of the problems that I will have to over come is that sometimes on uneven surfaces one front wheel is of the ground.  I need to look again at the front wheels or legs and add some form of suspension to one leg or wheel keeping both wheels tracking on the ground at all times. The power this droid has is enormous due to the massive motors although its rough surface capability is let down a bit by the small 100mm front wheels, problem is, that these are the largest wheels I can fit in the foot housings.  Most of the LED's are now working although I still have a few more to add.

I would say that I am about 80% completed now, head panels, back panel and a few more LED's to add.

28th January 2013 Update.

I am virtually there now and my T3 is almost complete. There are a few more cosmetic bits and bobs to add and a few more hi-tech gadgets but on the whole he is complete. All the head and body panels now move via radio control and all the LED's are now sound activated.  I still need to add a small LED projector into the head and will also be fitting a wireless webcam. I am also playing around with the idea of making the whole back panel a solar panel to provide onboard charging. I have added loads of build photos to the library below, enjoy.

8th February 2013 Update

C.I.D is virtually complete now with only a few more cosmetic bits and bobs to do. There is still a bit more road testing to do and checking to see what falls of when he is run over rougher surfaces. The head flap system is now fitted and working fine as is the new head LED's in the main eye.

I will be uploading new build photos each weeks so pop back to see the progress.

Some Videos now uploaded: 30th January 2013

Wow I've been looking online for T7-O1 builds and I found none. I had no idea this was here! You're a master builder. Would you mind coming to our forum on ez-robot(dot)com?

Have a look here and you will see a few images of the final build. I will get some more video of him uploaded soon as he has his first public event this weekend.

Fantastic! What are you using by way of CAD software? The renderings look great!
Awesome job!
Nice! I would do Red on White or Blue on White.
Really nice work! I work in Hollywood as a prop maker and have worked on some fun projects, but there is nothing like making your own creation and then sharing how you did it with the world. Nice work!
I loved these droids in KOTOR, nice work! You should enter this (and your driod creations that were published after November 4)  in the SciFi Contest
Yes! I spent an *awfully* long time playing as this droid in that first scene in KOTOR2. A nifty glitch granted starting the game with potentially unlimited monies, but boy was it time consuming.

Xenor, yes the head weight does worry me, I hope the servos i have picked are up to the job

Looking great so far. Good luck with that head weight, gonna be the tricky bit, methinks.

Hope your build goes well! It looks like it will turn out awesome. #RobotLove
