Introduction: Pop Rocks Chocolate Bars

About: I make all kinds of stuff, but I most enjoy projects involving electronics, audio, and a good helping of absurdity.

When my sister was getting ready to head off to Israel, she asked me if I wanted anything from there and I already had an answer prepared- the chocolate bars with Pop Rocks in them! These bars of excellence are exactly what they sound like: Delicous milk chocolate with unflavored Pop Rocks inside. They are incredible. My sister brought me back two bars, and now I have one left that I was going to save for a very special occasion. But then I thought to my self,  "Self, if  Canida can make Snickers Bars, why can't I make Pop Rocks bars?" And thus, I started on my journey. Right before I started, I did a bit of research, and it turns out that Pop Rocks once did make a chocolate bar, however I could only find $25 cases of the bars available for purchase.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

You will need the following materials:

-Pop Rocks (I used two packets of strawberry Pop Rocks, priced at $0.99 each.)

-Chocolate (I started out with two $0.99 chocolate bars, which ended not being enough, so I added several cups of chocolate chips.)

You will also need these tools:

-Something to melt the chocolate in (You can use a microwavable bowl in the microwave or a double boiler. I used the microwave.)

-A mold (I used plastic containers, you could also use clean soap molds, ramekins, or a sheet pan.)

-Something to line the mold with (use parchment paper for sheet pans, and cooking oil or cooking spray for anything else.)

-A whisk

-A spatula

Step 2: Prep the Mold

Like I said in the previous step, spray the molds with cooking spray or brush it with oil. Line your mold with parchment paper if you are using a sheet pan.

Step 3: Melt the Chocolate

Microwave the chocolate in a microwavable bowl in thirty second intervals and mix it around to get it a consistent texture. I started with two chocolate bars and quickly realized that this wasn't enough and added in a lot of chocolate chips.

Step 4: Add the Pop Rocks

After the chocolate is thoroughly melted, I poured in one packet of Pop Rocks, and had a minor panic attack: the Pop Rocks were popping in the chocolate! I suppose it inevitable, but I wasn't sure if the chocolate bars would end up being any good with most of the Pop Rocks having been already popped.

Step 5: Pour the Chocolate, and Add More Pop Rocks!

Pour the chocolate into the molds and use the spatula to make sure the mold is evenly coated.
After pouring the chocolate, open up your second packet of Pop Rocks and pour them all over the top of the chocolate in the molds.

Step 6: Cool It Down, and Wait

Grab your molds and stick them in the freezer. I'm sure a fridge would work fine, but a freezer is probably faster. Now wait a few hours.

Be patient, young grasshopper.

Step 7: Enjoy!

The results? A good chocolate bar with a slight strawberry taste and a small pop. It doesn't have as much pop as I would have liked, but it's still there. I had some trouble getting the bars out of their molds (I ended up using a paring knife to pry them out), so next time I would go with a sheet pan and parchment paper. If you do try this, let me know what you think.

Enjoy,
