Introduction: Popsicle Stick Crossbow

Picture of Popsicle Stick Crossbow

Ok here's my made up version of a crossbow. It's kinda like a bic pen crossbow on a larger scale. I used gorilla glue on all the joints of the body, but hot glue would probably work.

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials

Here's what you need:
7 Popsicle sticks
Pen tube (pen minus the writing part and end cap)
Chip clip or some other strong clip (not a clothes pin)
Gorilla glue or hot glue
Bamboo skewers for ammo

Step 2: Make the Body

Picture of Make the Body

Start by gluing a popsicle stick perpendicular to two others as shown in the first picture. Then glue another one down the middle of the two parallel sticks, like the picture. I used other popsicle sticks to support it. Then, just glue two more just like the front half of the body, but without the cross piece. Make a notch in each end of the cross piece.

Step 3: Add the Pen Tube and Clip

Picture of Add the Pen Tube and Clip

Glue the pen tube in the center of the front half of the body, this will guide the arrow as it goes out. Now just clip the clip onto the end of the whole thing and put some glue on it so it only opens to the top. Add the rubber band as shown wrapping it around the notches and onto the end of the pen. It is helpful to put a notch in the end of the pen so the rubber band doesn't slip off and to help load it.

Step 4: Load and Fire

Picture of Load and Fire

Shove a bamboo skewer in the pen tube and center it on the rubber band so it stays. Push it all the way in, center it on the body, and clip it. It improves the flight and makes it easier to load if you add a little bit of electrical tape on the front of a skewer. Fire by just unclipping the arrow.

not a crossbow, uses a rubberband for all power. check out mine:

Actually a weapon consisting of a bow fixed crosswise on a wooden stock, with grooves on the stock to direct the projectile is a crossbow.

My pocket crossbows fire harder than that thing.. And there's no rubber bands, and the firing mechanism is more solid.

pmac93 (author)paulm2007-06-16

yeah i know it uses a rubberband but who cares it shoots really far its just for fun

pieman12 (author)pmac932010-03-17

tats all that matters unless ur prtecting ur home with theese

Shadowfury (author)paulm2009-02-02

Well, it's kinda like a crossbow in that it uses a trigger-fire system. So technically, it's a trigger-operated crossbow-shaped slingshot.

Coffee bean (author)paulm2008-09-05

your right but who cares. btw iv made five crossbow kinda like urs but more draw length(power) and a better trigger

CapnTac (author)paulm2008-03-16

Holy crap! Is that thing even legal???

bobtet (author)2010-08-21

bobtet (author)2010-08-21

yours is a whole lot better than mine. HAHA. but something that you can do is cut a little notch at the bottom slitting the wood in two connected pecies and making the rubber band fit between the split and it improves strength by so much. Excuse me for my spelling. think of it like floss going in between your teeth, the floss your rubber band and the split between your two front teeth your bow and thats how you want your bow to be cut so the rubber band can go inbetween your wood split for maximum fire power.

Tobz1122 (author)2009-07-17

where are you supposed to hold it?

asakadoy (author)2009-05-21

its dangerous when you shoot its back to you

daman38 (author)2009-05-01

i made a big one, it is AWESOME!!!!!!

bylerfamily (author)2009-01-15

Would a mauly work for the clip?

airsofter2 (author)2008-08-29

if you are an airsofter, and have more bb's in your house than you do bamboo skewers, then you could use the back part of a mechanical pencil (the long stick w/ the eraser at the end) as a ramrod, and then use that to fire bbs, just make sure that the pen is big enuff for bbs, and the rod doesnt fall out the back

maveric101 (author)2008-07-31

you could surround the entire thing in tape i.e. electircal

killingrapist87 (author)2008-05-31

hey Pamac93.your invention is great in power and speed!if your looking for something cheap visit my skewer death bow. it is as good or mabey better in both catogorys.I garuntee satisfacsion.souldn't break until about 2012. P.S.:this was my first instructable. P.P.S.:my instuctables will get better.

tommyboy100 (author)2008-02-12

i like your cross bow i maid one like yours it works good but i need to up grade the bolts i need more weight at the front... anyways i love your cross bow and so dose my mom... BYE

Master Quan (author)2007-12-20

ok. thanks.

Master Quan (author)2007-12-20

Yeah ahhh... I just inadvertently shot myself with an 8 inch bamboo skewer in the hand when I was loading this. WARNING! It went into my hand about and 1 and a half inches. It bled like stink. lol. So just as a warning, be careful when you are loading, unloading, and shooting this cross bow.

Master Quan (author)2007-12-20

I have just finished making your cross bow. I have a quick question. Do 8 inch or 12 inch skewers work better?

pmac93 (author)Master Quan2007-12-20

it doesn't matter as long as they are as long as the whole need to be able to grab it with the clip and have the point sticking out of the pen tube

Mehmed6 (author)2007-07-15

the stir sticks failed at life!! i will try with popsicle sticks

Mehmed6 (author)2007-07-15

would coffe stir sticks work for this?? i think it wont, will u think it will

pmac93 (author)Mehmed62007-07-15

hmm it depends on how strong they are, but it could work if you used a weak rubberband, but then it would lose power.

Mehmed6 (author)pmac932007-07-15

i got the kind u get at starbucks, so i will try

Darkknight512 (author)2007-05-09

Simple, works.... but i wouldn't call it a crossbow, because all of the power is coming from the elastic, but overall pretty good. Come take a look at my crossbow :)

pmac93 (author)Darkknight5122007-05-09

yeah mine gets all the power from the rubber band, but it has over twice the range of yours if yours only shoots 9 meters.

instructa-fan (author)2007-05-06

to get a higher rating I would make it look a little nicer by puting a little more time into it...

toogood (author)2007-05-05

cold you use a ruler for the body?

pmac93 (author)toogood2007-05-05

yeah as long as it doesn't bend. A wooden one would probably work

gunmanx (author)2007-04-13

cool im making this right now im juz waiting for the glue to dry. this looks soooo cool nice instructable

casvandegoor (author)2007-04-01

that is nice! see my pen cross-bow!

Waterpolo93 (author)2007-03-29

NICE WORK this is awesome but i didnt have any scewers so i used a chop stick wiht a sowing needle on the tip of it
and it shot through hellsa stuff like soda cans (one that was full and cardboard and stuck in a ceiling in my house

pmac93 (author)Waterpolo932007-03-30

Thanks. Maybe I'll try some needle tipped ones....

your mom (author)2007-03-29
