Introduction: Portable Projector Screen on the Cheap

About: Im a constantly changing person with a little to much time on my hands most times lol i have tons of ideas but i never really do them. hope to change that soon :)

Hi everyone, so this is my first instructuble so please take it easy on me. its a portable projector screen i had an idea for that took me about 20 minutes to put together not including the prep and figuring of it. i spent absolutely nothing on it! i found everything i needed around my house. but in case your family doesn't hoard random things this can be changed and  tweaked and shouldn't come out to more than 50 usd$ from scratch.

What i used:
1 good quality curtain (black)
2 curtain rings
1 scrap iron fence.
1 good quality white screen material (mine is padded but has the look and feel of a real screen) should be able to find a small one on the cheap, look for a twin size padding for a bed. anything that feels right
duck tape
black tape
clear packing tape
scissors
(optional old t-shirt)

Step 1: First Comes a Frame

I used a scrap piece of rod iron fence from another project for the frame.
helped reduce time and money. make sure when getting a frame, you have enough material for your screen to cover it. you dont want to spend hours building or searching for the perfect frame to find out its to big or even to small for what you need it for.

Make sure your frame is nice and clean of sharp edges, mine had a few edges that were sharp. If you are worried about hurting any of the matrials you are putting on the frame. (like the curtain that my grandmother let me borrow for this) take an old shirt and  cut it down so you have a patch you can tape down onto the edges. i choose to skip this step and take the chance to keep my screen as less bulky as possible.

Step 2: Handles Are Needed

To prevent drilling into my wall just for this screen  i added handles. it was pretty simple to do.
The fence still had the packaging band on it. its made of flexi plastic and is pretty durable. i looped it underneath the fence creating a brace and used black tape to tape it down onto the bars so it wasnt sliding up and down the bars while trying to finish the project.

If you cant find a packing strap i also tested just duck tape. place a strip of duck tape sticky side up. then place another sticky side down ontop of it. do it 2-3 time to make sure its durable if your frame is a little heavy like mine.

Step 3: Curtain Call

Next step was the tricky part. adding material to the frame that would prevent sunlight, or any other light from coming through the back, and adding some great quality to your screen.

The componets of a real screen are very basic, material (found in good quality curtains ) keeps light out. and the screen (my white pad) gives it the canvas for the picture you can display.

I took the curtain and i turned it so it was down on the fence. (sun blocking material facing me) tape it down good, you might have to go through some folds if yours is to big like mine was. i used duck tape to keep it on the bars without any buldges. all ways keep your tape as straight as possible during this project.

you can grab a friend or an object to help you hold the frame in place while you put it together. i grabed a speaker and leaned it against it as i taped down the curtain nice and tight.

Step 4: Your Almost There!!

You are almost done!
after adding the original black curtain, i continued to do the same with the white. except i used clear packing tape sparingly. careful not to use to much around the edges and deffinetly avoid having tape in the middle of your screen. tape is very reflective and using to much can cause you to have a blotchy screen and just overal a bad picture.

Step 5: Finished

After taping down everything nice and tight, i added 2 curtain rings onto my handles and hung it up on an inforced curtain rod (dont attempt to hang a heavy fence from your curtain rod! ours is specialy made for our heavy curtains) just to prove to you the quality of everything i used i hung it up in the brightest room in the house, you can see how bright the sun is through the door yet not one sun ray comes thru that screen i made. Hope you have enjoyed my project. please vote for me thanks
