After moving to a new apartment, I noticed I had a lot of empty wall space and not enough stuff to fill the void. I decided I just had to make something for it, and I came up with the idea to make a level sign from Portal. That's right, another Portal-themed instructable. Anyway, it's a very simple design. Definitely not my best work, but I had a few limitations: it had to be able to fit in my car because thanks to college, I move every three months. It also had to be cheap because, again, college.

After musing over a few ideas, I decided white cloth stretched over a wooden frame with some sort of backlighting would be my best bet. As for the details on the front, I at first thought fabric paint and stencils would be best, but opted instead to create them from duct tape.

I'm pretty GLaD it turned out the way it did. It isn't perfect, but for the price and size limitations I was working with, it turned out quite well. It's a cheap and simple project, and I think most anyone will be able to easily recreate it (maybe Black Mesa? That was a joke, haha, fat chance!)

Step 1: Materials

- Wood (I used three 1" x 2" x 8' furring strips)
- A white bed sheet or similar material
- Wood screws
- LED rope light
- Black duct tape (I used Gorilla tape)
- Picture hanging wire and mounting hardware

what where the measurements for all the details on the sheet?

What was the length of the rope light that you used?

If anyone would be interested in making me one of these, please PM me with an offer. I really want one of these for my office.

love it! Would black spray paint and a stencil work for the pictures and numbers?
Hey, just wondering i'm attempting to make this as a summer project but im not quite sure how you made the smaller details like the little pictures. You said you used them as stencils? any help would be appreciated thx
Hey dude, that is pretty cool.
I have been looking around a bit, and cannot find a flat template. Could you post please?

Thanks, You have done a very nice job.
2 questions: 1st, How much did the materials set you back, and 2nd, ever thought of selling these, you could make some easy cash from these?
OMG I Love Portal !!! I'm going to try this for sure !! Thanks !!
This ended up looking awesome! I'm going to try to make my own this summer. Thanks for the idea.
Im going for it!
If you check out my profile, you will know that I made the original…
OMG MUST HAZ.

Anyway, aside from the horrible grammar I blatantly posted on to this miraculous page, this is AWESOME. I REALLY want one.
were did you get the sign template? did you get it from the game? or off the internet?
oh gosh, those jokes are pretty "puny" Yuk Yuk
I think that if you've placed the middle horizontal wood part just where you've drawn the level progress bar, it would be more discreet and better looking ^^ .
Anyway, I'll have to try out this cool project, that's just awesome! Great Job!
mind posting that 360 by 720 picture... i cant get an accurate enough image of it... and i loved chamber 14...

smart with the rope... but you could probably light it gust as even with those Fancy Smatzy florescent lights nowadays...
please read mine
I have a question, couldn't you use a staple gun and staple down the fabric? I just wonder how long the duct tape is going to hold.
Yeah, you probably could. I was worried about the sheet tearing, and also did not have a staple gun at the time :P

The duct tape has actually held quite well though, I used Gorilla tape, which is pretty awesome stuff.
This is really clever and it looks PERFECT! Even if I don't make one myself (god knows I'll try) I'll definitely use some of the techniques! Written very well btw :D
Thanks! If you do end up making one, post some pictures!
Lookin' good! I would love to have this hanging near my workbench :)
