Introduction: Portal Bookends

In this instructable I will try to show how I made my Portal bookends. I do not have the skills or the tools to make a fancy work so I tried to simplify it as much as I could. The items used are cheap and can be found easily.

The materials used were:

  • Simple pair of bookends
  • A piece of black EVA
  • Glue for EVA and styrofoam
  • Craft knife and scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Template of the portal dude printed on regular paper
  • Template of the portals printed on adhesive paper

I uploaded the templates I used, made using Inkscape based on the files provided by Zeptozephyr.

Step 1: The Portals

First I used the craft knife to remove the white part inside the portals, due to lack of skills my cuts were not along the lines and my knife was damaging the paper.

Secondly I separated the two portals and stick them to the uncool bookends. I got lucky here beacuse my portals were perfectly aligned with the margin of the paper, so I did not have to cut it.

After the adhesive paper is on the bookends we cut the excess paper along the bookend line.

Repeat the process for the other portal.

Step 2: The Dude

For the dude I cut the template and outlined it on the EVA, I realized I had a coin of the same size of the printed head so I used it instead, which made my job easier.

Using the craft knife and scissors I cut the EVA. The cuts were terrible, I could not keep a steady hand and the round parts got edges. This part I will probably redo as the results were not satisfactory.

I used the border of the EVA sheet so the part where the dude is glued to the bookend was perfectly straight, as it came from the factory.

On the Portal 2 logo the head floats above the body, as such a deed cannot be replicated on the real world I glued the head to the torso.

Step 3: Finishing

Using the ruler I traced the center of the portal and using the other template as guide I glued the dude to the bookend. I did not spare glue, if you don't use enough the pieces will fall. Hold them to the right place until it starts to dry.

One thing that I like about this is that, as you probably know, portals only work on walls painted with a special white ink and the portal bookends I saw on the internet were all metallic.

That's it. I hope you like it. Sorry for any gramatical error, English is not my native language.
