Portal/Rickroll Cake by Papersatan
Contest WinnerFeatured
Every year I make a birthday cake for my wonderfully geeky boyfriend. The past two years I made him a Cthulhu themed cake, so this year it was time for something different. His birthday fell on D&D night, so the whole geek crew would be gathered together. The crew has been bitten by the Ric Astley bug, and so it seemed fitting that I should Rickroll them all.

For this cake you will need:
One cake mix
Two nine inch round pans
Something for between the layers
A bunch of frosting ( I made 2.5 batches)
Tips for frosting the Rick cake (some simple round tips will do)
A Hat box large enough to fit over your cake ( I got a plain brown one from a craft store)
Chocolate
Whipped Cream
Cherries
A single candle

Step 1: Make the real cake

Make the cake in two nine inch round pans, bake as per instructions on the recipe or box you are using and let cool. Cut the layers so they are flat and even, and save the pieces you cut off. Fill it and frost it with plain white frosting. Make sure to put it on a plate large enough to hold your hat box.

you forgot decorations such as: fish shaped crackers, fish shaped sediment, fish shaped resins, fish shaped solid waste...

I wanted to post the picture of one we did for our teenage daughter. She was surprised but the look on her best friend's face was absolute shock. What a fun prank!

That's amazing. I gotta ask since hands are on the "cake"...was the lie cake really frosted or is it somehow permanently decorated?
starshipminivan says: Feb 1, 2011. 5:20 PM
It was frosted with royal icing and sprinkled with dried out chocolate fondant which that I grated. Royal icing sets up rock hard. I keep it stored in a hatbox and it still looks good.

They make display "buttercream" cakes in bakeries by frosting foam with royal icing and it lasts for years so I plan on keeping it for a while. I've been meaning to drill into the top and make a candle "handle" out of a dowel so I can use it as a cake saver.

This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Aperture Science:
We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead.

(Chorus 1)
But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive.

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
As they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you.

(Chorus 2)
Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta we're releasing on time.
So I'm GLaD I got burned think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive.

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa -
THAT WAS A JOKE. HA HA, FAT CHANCE.
Anyway, this cake is great:
It's so delicious and moist.

(Chorus 3)
Look at me still talking when there's science to do.
When I look out there it makes me GLaD I'm not you.
I've experiments to run there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive.
I feel FANTASTIC and I'm still alive.
While you're dying I'll be still alive.
And when you're dead I will be still alive.

Still alive
Still alive

Oh I am so clueless, PLEASE forgive me and don't be critical of my question- it will probably sound idiotic to those of you that understand. O.K...First off-Your cake looks terrific! Q: When the person cuts the cake, they hit cardboard right? so then, does he lift off the cardboard to reveal the cake or does the joke stop there because the "cake cutter" doesn't realize there is a real cake inside? Or do you pull off the cardboard hat?
