Introduction: Potato Cannon Silencer

How to build this silencer.  works well in turning the loud crack that a potato cannon makes into a low" poomph". This silencer works by taking all the excess pressure behind the potato, and slowly releasing it before the potato cannon exits the barell.

Costs around 15$ to 20$

Step 1: Materials

Heres what i used. (this is based off of a 2" barrel diameter.)

-One 2" to 2" coupler.
-Two 2" to 4" coupler.
-A lot of cotton.
-A piece of 4 inch pvc (or abs) pipe.
-A piece of 2 inch pipe.

Step 2: Building It

Heres how i built it:

The first thing you need to do is take the ridge off of the 2" to 4" couplings. This stops it from sliding onto the pipe and needs to be removed with a dremel tool or sandpaper.

After that is done, put the 2" to 2" coupling onto the end of the 2" pipe. Slide the 2" to 4" coupling down the pipe untill it touches the 2" to 2' coupling. (do not use glue)

You should then decide how long you want the inner barrel to be. i made mine 14 inches long but you make want one larger or smaller depending on the size of the cannon.

After cutting, slide the 4" pipe onto the 2" to 4" coupler and determine where you want to cut the 4" pipe.

Step 3: Building Continued

The next step is drilling the holes. a 3/16" drill bit is a good size to use. you will want more holes on the inside than the outside. You can use the drill bit on both pipes and always start deilling less holes. try not to put too many holes (especially on the outside). For my silencer i spaced the holes on the outside pipe (4") about an inch apart. This may be kind of confusing but dont worry about messing it up, it is easy too fix if to little holes are drilled.

Step 4: Packing the Cotton

Assemble the silencer without the top 2 to 4" coupler. Fill with cotton without packing too tightly. Overfill a little bit so some cotton goes into the top coupler when you slide it back on.

Step 5: Final Assembly

Take the pars of the silencer you filled with cotton and put the top coupler on. You now have the finished silencer. I did not use pvc glue because the parts fit together tightly. If you want to use glue, do not glue it untill you have tested it and no that everything is working right.

Step 6: Shooting

Load your potato cannon like normal and then slide the silencer on. it should fit snugly but if not you could put a small ring of thin tape on the end to hold it on.
