Introduction: Power on Your PC Using Your Cell Phone

As you all already know, nowadays we can acces our home PC remotely over the Internet. But what we do if we are away from home and our PC is not powered on, and also there is nobody left home to do that for us?
As I consider myself being a geek, I keep my old stuff, and also collect used and partially broken stuff.
Many of us changed often the mobile phone or cell phone... whatever you call it. I have a Nokia 1100 with it's microphone broken. So I tought it can be useful for something in the future.
I used only recovered parts for this project!

P.S. Sorry for poor photo quality... were made using another... mobile phone. :D

Step 1: What You Need

1. one old mobile phone with vibrating function - may be broken enough to receive calls.
2. one charging plug (it can be used the phone charger's original one)
3. two terminals miniature sockets and cables with miniature connectors
4. some old computer case front panel cable connectors ( I used Hdd Led, Power Button, Reset Button connectors) and front panel socket like (you can use jumperpins instead)
5. any small old electronic board (PCB) or perforated board (I used an old Philips TV small module PCB)
6. omron 12v miniature relay (with at least one pair of contacts)
7.one BC548 NPN transistor or equivalent
8. one 1N4001 diode
9. one opto-isolator with NPN transistor output. I used EL817 optoisolator from an broken ATX computer supply
10. one 470uF/10v capacitor

Step 2: The Circuit

If you use somekind of old PCB, you have to remove all existing parts and connectors. Also you should prepare all parts first, and study the circuit.

Step 3: Start Hacking the Phone...

First you have to open the phone... Use the proper screwdriver be very careful and patient.

You have to find the vibrating motor and remove it, we don't need it. It's something resembling a third of a plug, and usually has two terminals and on it's shaft some small iron piece. By rotating that small iron piece, it produces vibrations. You have to test it to see if it vibrates and also to discover it's polarity. You can do this by powering it up from a 1.5v battery.
On the phone's plastic case you have to pierce a hole somewhere near the location of the vibrating motor.

After you identified the + and - terminals, you have to solder on each corresponding contact on phone some thin insulated wire. I choosed black for -and red for +. make a small knot on the wires, close to the solderings and the other ends pass them to the previous pierced hole. O the other end of the wires, you will solder the miniature socket.
Now put the phone back all together, and proceed to the next step!

Step 4: Build the Circuit

You can either build the PCB for the circuit from step 2 or adapt the existing circuit on the recovered PCB. The circuit is very simple and easy to understand. I built it like this:

Step 5: Final Preparations....

Because this circuit will be used to emulate one pressing the PC Power-On button, the relay contacts must be connected in parallel with the existing Power-On button. That's why I made the Y connector, using the old Front Panel connector cables and some jumper pins I had lying around.
I used some plastic box also custom made by me. I added the 12V socket and used an 220v/12v wall adapter. Because I wanted also to charge the phone, I used a 7805 voltage regulator between the 12v line and the phone charger plug.

How to use the circuit? Well: first open your PC case, plug the Y connector in place of the Power-On front panel connector, and on the other end, plug the relay and the old Power-On front panel connector. Connect the phone on it's miniature connector, and 12V wall adapter. Power up the phone, set it on "vibrating alert only" and place it on a firm place. Make a short call to your "hacked" phone and your PC should start like magic.

I've customized my PC to autologon, and to start the remote connection software.
Now you're ready to manage your PC from virtually any place on earth!
