 You can remove the filter in a Rebel XT and replace with a readily available part on the internet to have an IR still camera. I just settled for buying a Cokin filter. Love the IR effect though!

Yes, silicon CCDs pick up IR very well. Who didn't believe this was true?
In early TV days, camera operators could crank-up the IR and get a picture that "saw through" clothes reasonably well.

Yeah.  There are probably a half dozen Instructables already predicated on this fact.  And there's the infamous Sony nightshot hack to get the see through effect you mention.
