Its Malaria Season folks. This instructable will show you how to protect yourself against insects and arthropods using the DOD Chemical Protective system. Protect yourself against threats like malaria and West Nile Virus and avoid those ichy mosquito bites.
This instructable is for treatment of ACU/BDU/DCU/ABU. But outdoor civilian clothing can be treated with civilian Permethrin (only difference is concentration). Make sure you wear long sleeves and pants for system to be effective.

The system uses Permethrin treated clothing as well as DEET applied to the skin. This two punch system is effective against a wide assortment of bugs that can be a vector for disease. Also by proper wear of clothing can reduce exposed skin from mosquitoes and areas where ticks can crawl up.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

You will need:
Permethrin clothing treatment. (Preventive Medicine will give you these kits, Civilians can get spray cans at Camping Stores.)
The spray on stuff will last like 4 to 6 weeks.
The liquid packet stuff will last 1 year. (52 washes or life of uniform)

Deet (also known as bug Spray)
Applied as needed directly on skin. Don't use around tents or plastics because it can melt certain synthetic plastics.

Uniform for treatment
Water (if necessary for your kit)

Step 2: Using Permathrin Clothing Treatment

Using the Permethrin clothing treatment
Follow directions on your kit. Permethrin is supposed to be safe but my kit contains gloves and more hazardous chemical warnings than actual instructions.


Directions
Go ahead and use the bathroom, smoke a cigarette, eat a light meal, blow your nose etc. We will be working with hazardous chemicals and you need about 3 hours set aside, you cant use the bathroom or eat/smoke without decontaminating yourself first.

Protective measures: Gloves and Eye Wear.

Wash Clothing if dirty.

Open packet and lay out materals. Don Protective gloves and glasses.

My kit says to roll coat tightly and tie with included string.

Add water to ziplock bag and contents of little vial.
Add coat, shake and store for 3 hours.


Repeat for pants.

Step 3: Hang Dry!

This stuff smells potent

After the three hours hang the coat/pants to dry either outside or in a well ventilated room.
Once dry mark garments with date of treatment.
Treatment lasts 1 year or 52 washings.

Step 4: Spray Treatments

Permethrin Aerosol Can Treatment.

Go outside and apply contents to clothing. Do not apply to clothing that you are wearing now. Hang outside to dry.
My can says it will treat one set of field uniform. Spray ¾ can onto clothing and the remainder onto mosquito netting.
Effects last 4 to 6 washings.
Mark garment with date of treatment.
Do not apply treatment to socks, underwear, Tshirt or cap.

Decontaminate by removing gloves and washing exposed skin with soap and water.

This treatment is not needed if you applied the Green Packet treatment already.

Step 5: Last

For this to be effective you must properly wear the uniform/cloths.
Keep sleeves rolled down.
Tuck Pants into boots.
Tuck in T-shirt into pants (do not apply permethrin to t shirt)
Apply DEET to exposed skin (hands face and neck)
