Alright! now you have a push button ignition in your car, just like all the high end sports cars, rocket ships, and computers. Go ahead and show it off, thats what you did it for, right? Be sure to post a picture here so we all can see it.
hey, "WannaBButch" I'm in the same boat that you were, somthing in the wiring to my starter is shorting and i have to put a wire on the starter and tap the pos led on the battery to start the car. I just got a switch to do what you did, have you found and problems with your set up cause it sounds alot ez-er than all this. I just don't want to short and thing else.
Excellent Instructable HAL 9000. Its nice to see someone trying to be more fuel efficient. People always bang on about the enviroment, but when your trying to save a quid(£) here and there, every little helps. Especially when you use your car for work. I'm looking to push button start my people carrier, and maybe change the indicators/signal lights and maybe all rear lighting with LEDs. Me thinks current consumption would be less, less alternator draw. Sure people will scorn, but it all adds up. Thank you.
True, i could smoke Ferraris with this thing, since a good friend of mine is a mechanic who specializes in CRX mods and rebuilds. But, as it stands, i get around 50 mpg depending on how i drive (e.g. when im not delivering pizzas), which is better than just about any "Fuel Efficient" cars made today. I like it just the way it is.
I do what i can, like i said, when im not delivering pizzas. i have very high pressure tires, so my car coasts very well. i pop it in neutral when i can, and shut off the engine when im on a long downhill stretch.
Most race/street cars with the push start have tons of switches. power Fuel pump water pump (for electric water pumps) starter (Closes circuit for starter to receive power) then the push button for the ignition It would be neat to make it completely keyless but have it setup that it still needs the special chip from the key near the ignition for it to start. Some people use this trick to bypass stock OEM alarm systems when they want to use a 3rd party alarm/remote start system when a bypass module isn't available.
Simple :) Push button is back. Most luxury/sports cars have them now, except there more chic looking, usually illuminated and higher security ratings than key start. Most need a chipped card or something similar inserted for the button to work.
hey bro. referring to HAL 9000. I got exactly what you listed. the one thing i am having questions about is what wires go to what poles and if i have to cut into my starter and my ignition or just one or the other. Maybe its something im not seeing but would you mind to explain a bit more for this lame-o bloke. Thanks in advance, Timon
I'm 15 be 16 at the end of this month, but I bought my mazda b3000 from this guy it had been stolen from him and all most striped.. but when they stole it they messed up the switch.. I use a screwdriver to start it..they said I need a new steering column. but I want to do a push button started in stead I'm going to go by your instructions.
I did this a while ago in my car because the wiring harness has a short in it some where. I did a lot less work though. I bought a switch from Oreilly's for four dollars and ran a wire from the positive post on the battery to one side of the momentary switch and another wire from the other side of the switch to the starter wire at the starter. Didn't have to disassemble the dash too much or cut any wires or really change anything that was stock on the vehicle.
Yes, please, let me clear this up now. I do still need a key. the only effect the button has is the same as turning the key to start the engine. i still need to have the key in and turned to "on" for the engine to stay running.
hold on a second... if your key is in and turned "on".....then how does the button exactly turn your car on........if the car is already turned on? i do think this is an awesome idea but until that gets cleared up i doubt ill do that to my car. i have a 1993 pontiac bonneville SSEI and i think that would be pretty cool to add to all the gadgets it already has...but whats the point if the key already turns it on?
ok, let me outline my new starting procedure for you 1) i get in the car 2) i put the key in the keyhole and turn two clicks ahead so that the stereo, headlights, and other gadgets work 3) now, when most people would turn their key ahead one more click to Start the engine, i push the button. it's that simple. the button turns the engine on. the key keeps the engine on. the key is there as a security feature since the car will not work without it. also it keeps the steering wheel from locking.
Think of it not so much as a shortcut for practicality's sake, but a totally awesome push-a-red-button-and-your-car-starts kinda thing. granted, its not going to save any time, but that exhilarating feeling you get when you poke it and it goes vroom will likely make the extra two seconds worth it. Awesome idea, solid design, and through instructions. Keep them coming.
Thanks, Fraggie! Now lets see a "Charlotte" potato cannon instructable!! Or any of the other things you've done that would make great instructables (a slough of D&D related tips and tricks? TI-83+ programming?)
