Introduction: Quilted Maple Cross

About: I am a teacher who enjoys environmentally responsible woodworking. Most evenings will find me in the shop working with my now 8 year old son Shay who is both my greatest helper and biggest fan.

My son and I built this for a local fundraiser.  I had this beautiful quilted maple board, fantastic figure (though she cracked on me in the figure after surfacing) but I couldn't seem to figure out what to do with it.  I decided on a wall hanging as it would display the figure in the board nicely.  We put the cross on it because I live in a small, conservative, religious town and felt that would be appreciated the most.  This was also the piece I used to test colored epoxy.  I wanted to make sure that coloring the epoxy wouldn't change the rest of it's properties.  Other than extending it's hardening time by 30% or more it didn't.  I found out by accident that heating the colored epoxy in the microwave for 10 seconds or so will dramatically shorten set time.  I haven't tried it with the clear yet but will soon.
