Introduction: RC TANK With HIGH TORQUE

About: I'm a school student who aspires to pursue robotics. I love working on DIY projects and am learning programming and algorithms.

Toy guns are AWESOME! But it would have been more fun to use when controlled by your fingers and mounted on a RC car. In short, RC tank is an interesting project to build. And if you want to add more awesomeness, you can add IP-cameras, IR transmitter and receiver and make two of these to make the tank wars computer games a reality!

This project does not require much hardware-building skills like welding, cutting, etc. You only need to know have a little circuit knowledge so you can modify or create your own circuit instead of using mine, which is given in the following steps, and go ahead according to the parts you have or even betterment of your project.

The tank is equipped with 4 motors which give it the advantage of 4-wheel-drive, a gun which is operated by the transmitter. Therefore, all the functions and movements of the tank are controlled remotely.

THINGS YOU’ll NEED:

- Electromagnet relays x8

- 8 channel transmitter and receiver x1

- 1 Chassis(PLEASE REFER TO PICTURES FOR THE EXACT SHAPE OF THE CHASSIS)(SIZE: 19 x 10.5 cm) x1

- Wheel (Diameter: 6 to 8 cm) x4

- 300 RPM motors x4

- 1 SPY GEAR laser and shooter alarm(PLEASE REFER TO NOTE BELOW) x1

And you’ll also need some wires, cardboard, soldering wire and soldering iron and a cutter.

I’ve used 4 300 RPM VEGAKIT motors. Also, If you want to use tracked wheels, you can use because there is no such body part that could cause any hindrance in the proper movement of the tracks.

NOTE: You do not need actually need a spy gear. You just need an electronic gun i.e. a gun that operates on the press of a button/ supply of current.

Step 1: ATTACH THE WHEELS

In the side holes of the chassis, attach the 300 RPM motors.

Then, connect the protruding shafts to the wheels.

And then place the track-belt around the wheels.

Bring out the wires from the top hole.

Step 2: MODIFY THE SPY GEAR

THIS STEP IS OPTIONAL. FOLLOW ONLY IF YOU ARE USING THE SPY

GEAR. IF NOT, you just have top place your gun on the chassis as shown in the pictures.

Open the Spy gear shooter alarm and cut the battery wires. Take out the PCB and the motion sensing part but make sure that motor parts are not disturbed.

Now open up the laser alarm and cut the protruding part so that you get the led out with its wires. Be cautious of the little PCB and the laser body. If they get destroyed, your laser is almost destroyed. Then you may have to get another laser body with the laser.

Now, all you have to do is to place the laser on the shooter’s body in your own desired place.

Step 3: MOUNT THE GUN

You will need to cut cardboard clamps to support the gun.

Cut out cardboard pieces and stick them together in order to make supports as shown in the pictures.

This step is entirely dependent on you. You can even use metal parts to screw the gun on your chassis to make it strong.

Step 4: BUILD THE CIRCUIT

This step involves your motors, transmitter and receiver, relays and soldering. There are basically 5 functions of the tank:

i) FORWARD

ii) BACKWARD

iii) LEFT

iv) RIGHT

v) FIRE

Since we have only 8 buttons on the remote, we have to use 8 relays.

Connect the corresponding wires of motors on the same side so that they work as 1 motor i.e. you will have to supply two terminals on left side and two to the two right side motors.

Now make the connections exactly as shown in the figure with each motor (left side and right side) and the gun. By now, all your relays of the receiver would have been used up.

The circuit is such that when you press two buttons at a time, 2 relays will get activated and closes the corresponding circuit. You will have to see which relay you are operating.

Either you can choose the right relays or you can place the switches on the transmitter in a desired manner so that it becomes easy for you to press two buttons at a time.

If you have attached the laser, just connect it to the main power switch of the tank. So as you switch on the power supply of the tank, your laser is on.

Now just connect the batteries to your transmitter and ENJOY!
