Ah, what a good way to present the colorful cakes

First off, thank you for the beautiful idea!

About how many of the 4oz jars would you say a box of batter would make? I plan on making these for a friend's going-away party in the colors of his new college, but I don't want to end up with too much left-over batter.

I made them too! I added a TON of dye and they came out super bright and pretty!

The only problem was, I couldn't find glass jars, so I had to make them the traditional way. This was nice, though, because it dyed the white wrapper the colors of the cupcake! Brought them to school and everyone adored them!

These look great. In the past, i have put too much dye in stuff and you can actually taste a bitterness. I will have to retry. How did you fill the center with icing like that?
mommyknows1 (author) in reply to cvaleMay 16, 2011. 5:17 PM
These look fabulous cvale! Great colour :) Thanks for taking the time to comment and post photos.

Hi Haru,

Thank you for your comment. Yes, you have to eat it from the jar with a fork or spoon.

Did you do anything fun with the sliced-off bits of cake top?
mommyknows1 (author) in reply to canidaMay 16, 2011. 1:15 PM
My five year old ate them before all of the other kids came home from school. She absolutely had fun :)

Why use the colored frosting in the batter instead of food coloring? What does that do for you?
mommyknows1 (author) in reply to gijoebobMay 16, 2011. 11:25 AM
The icing colours are food-colouring ... I think Wilton markets them for colouring frosting but they can be used to dye other food products.

Audreyvgs says: May 16, 2011. 9:08 AM
Did you grease the jars first?
mommyknows1 (author) in reply to AudreyvgsMay 16, 2011. 11:22 AM
I didn't grease the jars. I thought about it, but seeing as they don't need to come out of the mold easily (using a spoon to scoop and eat), and you want the rainbow effect to be visible with no barrier, I decided not to.

They didn't stick much at all.
NaturalCrafter says: May 12, 2011. 11:39 PM
I never knew you could get so many colors. Pretty to look at.
mommyknows1 (author) in reply to NaturalCrafterMay 13, 2011. 10:53 AM
Thank you NaturalCrafter :) I only used five colours but they combine to make even more.
NaturalCrafter in reply to mommyknows1May 15, 2011. 11:58 PM

I've been doing rainbow cupcakes with food coloring for a while now, but putting them in glass jars is both clever and gorgeous! Thanks for the post.
