Look at this Raspberry board. Its is a good choice if you want to make your own internet and multimedia station to play HD movies, browse on the web watch Youtube trailers listen your MP3 collections for literally peanuts. All you need to do, plug all the cables to they sockets, upload the software and good to go. 
So just plug in an SD card, HDMI cable, LAN cable, USB cable, audio cable, and the power cable...and all your 5 cables are sticking out from the 4 sides of the board. How lame it is!  

When you order a raspberry you get a bare panel, if you need some housing, you can easily search for boxes, cases one the internet...but still you have all sides spiked with cables....and that is what I wanted to fix.

Step 1: Extending inputs/outputs

How to place all the sockets to the back of a Raspberry powered multimedia case?

Some people could solder, de-solder HDMI sockets, micro SD sockets...etc, and wire them again, but I could not. I just extended everything to the back with existing cables. It might look messy inside, but looks great from outside.

Designing the rear panel, it seamed obvious to me to use the side of the Raspberry PI where USB and the LAN outputs are, because they need to be hold strong and 2 outputs are on the same side. And in this case the SD card is on the front side. All the other connectors can be extended easily.

I searched first for solutions to extend the HDMI. First I though some 90 degree converters just simply turn the socket facing to the back. Ordered and tried the 90 degree adaptor I just realised that it turns completelly to the opposite way. Than I found this 20 cm long HDMI extension. After I received just twisted and fixed the cable to the board and I liked the result. The cable sit very tight so I dont think it will ever come out from the casing. For the audio and the video I just made short extension cables.

The power source is 5V and recommended 1.2 Amp. The Raspberry's  power socket is now on the front on the panel, which is the worst place. I used a Micro USB pigtail cable to connect my new rear power point. Now I can use a standard 5V adaptor to power it up.

Finally all of the new extended  sockets are on the rear side.

Is it possible tot use Wifi instead of a cable connection. land if so hoe?

Yes it supports WIFI my dongle was about $11 works fine, as far as remotes download the free app for your smartphone and be done with it. You can also use your WII keyboard (yes I have one working fine, this is best when text is necessary) about $20. <br> <br>Also of note it the FAVI micro keyboard check out my Port A Pi project that includes WIFI, Micro keyboard and touchpad. Unfortunately I have neither a smartphone (Apple or Android) or a WII Keyboard. Living on a pension, I was looking for a cheap solution and as the Instructable showed a TV IR Remote (which I have) and a TSOP IR Receiver (cheap on eBay) that seemed to be the way...
There is an option to use the TV remote through the TV to control the Raspberry Pi over HDMI connection. It may not works on every TV....but that I don't know... That is the cheapest way. It does not require the TSOP sensor.
I also use it with a super cheap off-brand bluetooth keyboard. The tiny USB bluetooth receiver is visible on that picture where the fully assembled box from the rear side is.
I have a NAS and the media player connects to it over ethernet. There are several wifi units available for it if you like it that way. <br>
So that adds about $200 to the cost - hmmmm...<br>Can you expand on the IR-Remote question?<br>Thanks
You dont need this remote. It is working through the TV with its own remote. Also works with and android app and I am sure there is some apple app for it as well. Bluetooth connection is possible using BT keyboard. <br>Feel free to google it :)

I need to look into this. My &quot;DLNA compliant&quot; Samsung tv isn't seeing or disconnects from any and all servers I've tried. 2012 seems like a bad vintage for Samsung &quot;Smart&quot; tv's. Vexing. Time to make an external solution and go in through HDMI.
You must purchase a license to play MPEG2 video ($2). It works well except fast forward does not work well. <br> <br>On the DLNA front, if you are running Windows 7 you can setup a DLNA server try that, if it cannot connect to that then it is the TV side it HD requires bandwidth maybe that is why it is disconnecting. <br> <br>I have 2 WDTV streamers and 2 RPIs, The WDTV is good for local content (very few glitches) the pi's are best at internet content. Even though Amazon killed XBMC by adding Flash DRM.

You can use ponoko or razor lab but there is many more online services that will laser cut, CNC mill, 3D print, waterjet cut, plasma cut ECT. <br>
Where did you get the ir sensor from and did you have to do something special to get it working? It looks like a nice way to incorporate one.
