Raw, vegan, chewy, rich, sugar free, and healthy chocolate peanut butter brownies! Who just cringed?? If you did you might want to think twice and actually try this dessert. Your brain won't know the difference in taste only texture which is still quite delightful.

Your body will enjoy protein, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants by eating this dessert! Yay!

I made these on a day that the temperature was 86 degrees and the humidity was 78%. Not exactly a day you want to scorch up the kitchen by turning on the oven to make brownies. All you need for these is a nine inch square pan and a food processor.

They are simple and delicious and will definitely please and satisfy the kiddos! When I was making them my son walked into the kitchen and said, "Yum, I smell brownies!"

For the brownie layer in this dessert you will need the following recipe and a food processor.

1 c. walnuts
1/2 c. almonds
2 T. chia seeds
2 T. shredded unsweetened coconut
1 c. pitted dates
1 c. raisins
2 t. vanilla extract
1/4 c. cocoa powder
pinch of salt

In the bowl of a food processor add nuts and grind until crumbly. Add chia seeds and coconut and whiz to incorporate. Transfer mixture to a bowl. Without cleaning the food processor add dates and raisins. Grind until texture is like a thick paste. Add nut mixture to date mixture in the food processor and add cocoa powder, vanilla and salt. Grind again until mixture can hold together when pinched. Divide mixture in half and set aside.

Any whole food options for the dates and raisins?

You will have to elaborate. I guess I don't know what you mean.

DISCLAIMER: I have a major sweet tooth!

My wife and I just made these... sort of. We didn't use the same ingredients or amounts. We had a walnut, almond, pistachio, craisin mixture on hand. So, we substituted the walnut, almond, and raisins with that (for both types of layers).

We also didn't grind the nuts separately, due to them already being mixed in with the craisins. So, our brownie layers were a bit on the dry side, I think.

To be frank, I wouldn't necessarily call them brownies. I mean, you can call them what you want. But, they're much more like energy bars in flavor and texture.

Overall, I liked our version. But, I'll definitely use raisins next time. The craisins were a bit tart. I wonder if bananas would work in this recipe, or if they would be too soft. Maybe if you chill them? Anyhow, thanks for the recipe. I always enjoy trying vegan/raw recipes.

Raisins and dates have a lot of natural sugar content making the flavor just Iike a brownie. Definitely try that next time. You really shouldn't be able to tell the difference in flavor. Plus dates and raisins don't have any refined sugar like craisins do. I have never eaten a brownie with a cranberry like flavor so maybe that's where you were missing out.

I did mention in the instructable that the texture is not like a brownie but I think if you refine the recipe you will be pleased!

Try adding more vanilla extract (or almond extract) to get the moisture content you want. Mine were not dry and there isn't anything worse than a dry dessert!!!!

Thanks for trying them and I'm glad you enjoyed them!

Are these gluten free?
wold630 (author) says: Jun 18, 2012. 7:12 PM
I don't know much about eating gluten free or wheat allergies to answer that for sure. I do know that most brands of oats are not gluten free so you would need to do some more homework and make sure you buy certified gluten free oats.

Ok, Thanks!

I didn't think to list dairy free on these with the rest of the good stuff! Thank you for noticing that! These would be great for someone with a dairy allergy.
