Introduction: Real-Life Motion Map (Drop C)


  • 1.6 m of PVC pipe
  • about 2 m of fishing line
  • 10 Ping Pong Balls
  • A roll of tape
  • Scissors
  • Meter stick/Ruler

Use graph for reference. - (link to graph for values of angle, velocities, etc.)

Step 1: Markings

About 25 cm away from one of the sides of the PVC pipe, make a marking with either a sharpie or a pen. Afterwards, make 9 more markings that are about 11 cm apart from one another. (You should have 10 markings in total)

Step 2: The Peak

Measure and cut 5 cm of fishing line. This will be the peak of the graph.

Step 3: Other Points

To find the other points, find the distance between any point on the graph and subtract it from the peak point and then add it to 5 cm. An equation for this step is: h= (1.713 m - y2 m) + 5 cm where y2 is equal to the y-value of the selected point on the graph. (The h-value will be the length of the fishing line for that specific point)

Step 4: Repeat

Repeat the previous step with the rest of the points.

Step 5: Construction

Use a piece of tape to attach the ball to one of the cut pieces of fishing line. (Do this for all ten ping pong balls) Next, tape the fishing line to a marking on the PVC pipe. *(Make sure the string length corresponds to the marking you are putting it on)* Use the graph and final product picture for reference

Step 6: Finding the Graph From the Real-Life Graph

In order to find the graph, you will first measure the distance (horizontally) between the ping pong balls in order to find the time frame the graph takes place. Next you would measure the length of each string (going from the pipe down to the bottom of the string).
