how to use your buspirate with realterm

the buspirate is the ultamate hardware hackers tool secound to the logic probe
its a univervial interface and insterface emulator witm many other fetures
it works with
  • 1-Wire
  • I2C
  • SPI
  • JTAG
  • Asynchronous serial
  • MIDI
  • PC keyboard
  • HD44780 LCD
  • 2- and 3-wire libraries with bitwise pin control

and also has

  • 0-6volt measurement probe
  • 1Hz-40MHz frequency measurement
  • 1kHz - 4MHz pulse-width modulator, frequency generator
  • On-board multi-voltage pull-up resistors
  • On-board 3.3volt and 5volt power supplies with software reset
  • Macros for common operations
  • Bus traffic sniffer (SPI)
  • A bootloader for easy firmware updates

Step 1: Download Realterm

go to the realterm sf here http://realterm.sourceforge.net/ and download it for your os

Step 2: First Step: Line Count

depending on your display your line count will differ
you can use the existing line size or make it larger for ease in the display tab
in my case 60 was best

Step 3: Step 2: Port and Settings

go to the "port" tab
set your baud to 115200 (the buspirate default)
Set your port in my case it was 4 but if you click the arrow to drop the drop box it should show the serial ports if you don't know this you can play around with the settings until you get it right
check the Xon and the Xoff box
check and see if your settings match up with the image

Step 4: Step 3: Making Contact

click on the black box and hit the "i" key on your keyboard and press enter
you should get soemthing like this

Step 5: Trouble Shooting

make sure you have the FDTI drivers installed
make sure you have connected the buspirate and the red led is lit
if you were on preorder 2 make sure you have uploaded the firmware see this for more information http://dangerousprototypes.com/2009/07/24/bus-pirate-firmware-upgrades/ and http://whereisian.com/forum/index.php?topic=100.0

Step 6: RTFM

OK! your done! ... hit "?" enter for syntax and hit "M" enter for interface modes and be sure to read the F-ing manual! http://dangerousprototypes.com/bus-pirate-manual/
