Recoloring Legos

I recently got the 8070 supercar Lego set and tried to put a convertible top on it. Unfortunately, I didn't have the pieces I needed in red (the color of the car) and so I wanted to recolor them. I tried many ways, but spraypaint works best.

Step 1: Safety and Materials

Safety: Take all precautions mentioned on your can of spraypaint ( work in a well ventilated area, wear a mask, etc. )

Materials: 

Spraypaint for PLASTICS (take a piece of the color you want to compare at the store) 
Note: ^ You can use regular spraypaint but you will need to rough up the sides of your Legos with sandpaper.

2 pieces of paper to spray on

the Legos you wish to recolor

 

Step 2: Spray

Coat your pieces thoroughly with paint and then quickly blow the paint out of the holes. Transfer to the other paper.

Step 3: Touch up

Touch up the Legos lightly on the other paper if needed. 

If you can see lots of spots and the Legos aren't fully coated, repeat step 2.

Shake them around on the paper then leave them there to dry. (15 to 20 minutes)

Step 4: Use

Reattach or attach the recolored pieces to any Lego sets.

Did you paint them by holding the button down constantly or did you spray paint them the correct way. It just looks like you incorrectly used the paint because of the paper they were on.

I've never tried, but I bet they could be solvent died like pvc

I tried it, and it was a mess. the solvent reacted with the paint on the Legos and it blew up. Thanks for the idea, though

No, those were mangled. I had lots of the pieces-- four 5 holes and two 3 holes-- just not in red.

Nice idea, however I can see in the picture you proper coated the pieces in one blast.

With spray paint your best bet is to layer the paint on. Give it a slight spray (not enough to cover it yet) walk around the garden for a few minutes, then give it another spray, use different angles to get the whole piece.

You really have to take your time to build up a good coating. If the paint has a wet look to it, you laid on too much in one go.
