Introduction: Recycle a Wool Sweater Into a Pet Carrier

About: I love to make things & work with my hands. I mostly make stuff for dogs and sometimes I dabble with recipes, too. Right now I'm in the process of setting up a DIY blog for pet lovers.

This project is super easy to make! You need basic sewing skills and a wool sweater that you don't wear anymore. The bag took me about 20 minutes from start to finish. If you want a plain old tote bag, just skip the step where you cut out the notch for you pet's head.

If you liked this 'ible, I have a lot more pet related crafts at myblog. Come by for a visit, I'd love to make your aquaintance :)

Step 1: Tools & Supplies

The supplies you need for this project are pretty minimal. You need an old wool sweater, a pair of scissors, a black marker, some straight pins and a sewing machine. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can use a needle and thread.

If you would like to add a little elegance to your bag, you can finish the cut parts of the sweater with some ribbon or fabric.

Step 2: Cut Off the Sleeves

'Nuff said about this step :)

Step 3: Making the Bag Handles

Make two cuts from the shoulders, down to where the arm holes end. Then make a cut straight across to remove this square of material. You can make the handles as thick or as thin as you want.

Step 4: Pinning the Sweater

Turn the sweater inside out. Pin the tops of the handles together. Do likewise for the bottom of the sweater

Step 5: Sewing the Sweater

Sew two straight seams on the sleeve tops and the sweater bottom. When you are finished sewing, trim the loose ends of the thread.

Step 6: Making the Notch

Take a black marker and trace an allowance for your pet’s head to poke out of the bag. The cut it out. Turn the sweater bag right side out and you’re ready to go!
