I am sorry to see that you had to take the directions down! This is the coolest fabric necklace project I have seen! Would anyone be willing to email me the directions or point me to a place where I could find them? Thank you for any suggestions.

Has anyone had the problem of the fabric strips 'shedding' ? I made this T-shirt necklace,& I love it, but it's shedding little bits of fabric from when it was cut & stretched. What do you think I can do to stop this?

says:
I have the best luck with this sort of thing when I tear the strips instead of cutting them. I haven't made the necklace, but I've made bracelets; the tighter weave of the bracelets might be what is keeping them from shedding though.

Hi Mtalus, thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try to make another one from a different fabric t-shirt. I 'll try tearing the strips, so then they'll be on the straight grain, you might be right, maybe they're shedding because they're off the grain. thanks! Will let you know how it goes.

So sorry to hear that your necklace is shedding. That hasn't happened to me. Sounds like maybe the fabric just isn't right for this project. I'm not sure if you can fix it because if you try to finish the edges it won't curl in properly. I would recommend trying with a different shirt and make sure that it is a stretchy cotton (jersey fabric works the best I think). Sorry I'm not much help. I hope you can figure something out. :)

Thanks so much for replying! I used a fruit of the loom Tshirt, without side seams, so I thought that would be good. Maybe because it was all cotton? But, I'll try another kind of Tshirt. I will figure something out, I'm sure. We crafters don't like to give up! & I love the necklace, its just too cool not to make it. I do appreciate you taking the time to answer. Have a good day! jani

woohoo!! mine turned out nicely, same as the pic. being lazy/frugal/resourceful, i used plain old scissors without detriment to the finished product. a plain sized for 10-year-old) kids t shirt worked well, but the fabric did not curl in on itself when i tried with a printed shirt. it still looks kinda cool, but plain seems to work best,

This is such a super chick necklace! I'm defiantly going to have to make one. Thanks *:)

I made one and it looks very nice, even though I completely botched it up somewhere and the strips became uneven. I guess that what I get for having only one pair of scissors that I made from 3 broken scissors.

i just made a yellow one, its awesome, but too hot for summer in Georgia! i guess ill wait till fall 2 wear it =) thanks
I think this is important... sorry if you already answered this... what happens if you put this into a washing machine? my guess is it will totally mess it up, how can you wash this?
Jun 22, 2009. 10:12 PMcucumbersome (author)
says:
You're right, the washing machine would probably tangle it into a mess. If you hand wash it, you can be careful about not letting the strands tangle. I handwash a few things, so it's not a big deal for me.
I found this article on hand washing, if you are interested.
(Someone needs to make an instructable for this...)
I hope that helps. :)

Awesome! I made several necklaces on the first night that I read your instructions. Making them is addictive. I hung a large bead from one loop by pulling loop end through large bead eye and securing with a knot on the end. My daughter took the necklace. I saw it in her jewelry collection. Thank you for this excitingly easy wearable.

I made one out of a thin stretchy jersey T shirt just like the one here. Made some pony tail bands and the bracelet too. Had trouble with wrapping and tucking the ends over the seams to cover them though. Finally, they came out great. I also made a variation that gives the necklace a hippi look by first fringing up about 1 1/2 inches along the bottom edge before cutting the strip, then cutting across an inch above the top of the fringe cuts something like this: ____________________________ TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT Just slice up all along bottom. Stretch it out and once it curls, the fringing winds up on both sides of the strip. It came out very nice. You could make the fringing very long and put beads on some on the fringe too. But the T-shirts that have even a fine ribbing in them do not work. The strips do not curl when you stretch them : (

PROPS! I'm definitely going to make this one since it's fun and won't take so long as to be cast off into the 'unfinished project' pile.

Just an update. I DID make one that very day. It came out looking exactly as the one you had pictured (I even found a t shirt the same color) and I got nothing but compliments on it all day. I'm going to make some now using more colors and perhaps adding some glass beads to the piece you use to secure the loops. All my friends want one! A great instructable!

This is a rockin' cool project. I just made one with a light blue t shirt and when I tied the loops together, I added a turquoise disk. It really adds a little elegence to a casual project. THANKS!

OK...real dumb questions here: Do you cut off the "neck" of the shirt? And, when you are cutting the strips, are they all seperate, or do you stop cutting at a certain point before you cut them all loose? I really like the looks of this, and there are so many color possibilities here!!!
Jun 12, 2009. 12:15 PMcucumbersome (author)
says:
You cut the strips from the body of the shirt. Once you get up to the sleeves, you have to stop because they won't be loops anymore. Hope that helps! :)
To everyone with questions, I have posted a more in-depth tutorial on how to make a recycled t-shirt bracelet. It is the same idea, so check it out:

wow, I just thought of this... I must sacrifice more old t-shirt and make some multicolored! so many possibilities! Thank you again! Oh and I think I have an old broach that would add something to them as well.... :)

Lovely and yet so easy. I have old t-shirts for making pillows and crocheting rugs with, I must hit my stash that I have not cut up yet and make this, it would be perfect for some family functions coming up to dress up my t-shirt and blue jeans that I will most likely wear to the parties. :)

Oops! Those were inches - I changed that. Thanks for pointing it out!
I got lost between steps 2 and 3. Can you provide more pics or diagrams of what you did to the loops once they were cut to make them look like what you're wearing in the first picture>?
Jun 7, 2009. 2:17 PMcucumbersome (author)
says:
Oh sorry, the first picture is just an example. It's the exact same thing, but I made it with a gray shirt. It is just looped around my neck twice to make it look thick. Does that help at all? :)
You've done a lovely job, but I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I'm gonna try. You look very chic in it. well done!

It looks like you took some of the loops to tie all the strands together at one point sort of like a pony tail hair knot/holder. Is that right?

says:
Can you do this with a T-Shirt that has seams on the sides?!
Jun 9, 2009. 4:56 PMcucumbersome (author)
says:
Yup, you can. I made one that had side seams. When I gathered up all the fabric loops, I just lined up all the side seams and wrapped both clusters of seams up with a scrap of fabric. You end up with two knots instead of one, that's all.

says:
This is a really great t-shirt hack. I don't know if I have any tubular t-shirts (aka t-shirts w/o side seams) to try this. Yet maybe it can be done with a regular t-shirt if I knot the side seams? *thinks some more* Great instructable - made me get more creative now....
