When recording a music, sometimes the sound table controller selects Left channel for Voice and Right channel for guitar, bass and drums (or the opposite).

What I am saying is they SOMETIMES separate Voice for a exclusive channel. However, today, it's rare to see that; check out The Who songs, especially "Eminence Front"; without the Left channel you cant hear the singer except in the Chorus...

Left, Right Channels --> Search for Stereo Audio

nice, remove the whole song as well as the vocals. I thought you were gonna go for some EQ or something, would have been much more effective

this technique will only render the song out of phase. it will remove alot of frequencies and the song will sound empty it is not the correct way to remove frequencies.

I am unable to get this to work, i've tried 3 or 4 different songs and none of them work. any explanation? they're all dragged and dropped from itunes into audacity and i'd expect they're relatively high quality encodings.

Audacity only takes Mp3...etc. Itunes uses MPEG4.

this will only work if the song has a good quality, means it is recorded in a studio and not reconverted after, because most of the songs you can find from internet don't have that quality, so they don't really have lyrics in one side and music in the other, and it makes it impossible to remove them in this way, but instead Audacity has another feature called Vocal Remover, I don't really know how it works for this type of files with bad quality but it's made for that :)
Mar 10, 2011. 6:16 PMMCzone says:
i am sorry i ment bad quality not bab

Thanks man, I needed to make a song instrumental for English project about rap, but I wanted to use a Danish song, but I couldn't find any instrumentals for it. So thank you very much. You can still hear some vocals but it's fine. Thanks again. :)

Mar 14, 2009. 4:00 PMk30000 says:
it works because when you play a song in stereo what happens is most of the music is played out of one speaker with a quiet bit of lyrics then in the other speaker you get a quiet bit of music with a load bit of lyrics to make it surround sound. if you want to try this it works best with earphones. what you do is put 1 ear phone in your ear and leave the other one out then vica versa and you should here the difference. hope i helped

That isn't why this method works. It works because lead vocals are almost always put in the center of the mix, meaning 100% out of Left and 100% out of Right. When you invert the right channel and convert both channels to mono the phase cancels out what was in the center of the mix. Unfortunatly that usually wil take out the bass and some of the drums too. And it leaves the reverb from the vocals.

I'm not sure if i can agree with what you guys say about the overall place of lead vocals in the stereo image.
I quote: "lead vocals are almost always put in the center of the mix, meaning 100% out of Left and 100% out of Right"
This more or less states that the lead vocal track is single processed added into the mix, a very simple basic technique which makes me believe not to be the one global standard way to go..
According to my knowledge it is just as often prefered to proces the vocal track 3 times in one mix with modern music productions. One signal panned right, another one left and a third layer kept in the center of the mix. The stereo image of the 3 vocal layers together can than easily be controlled and finetuned with the proper use of stereo imaging tools and possible other desired effects.
And that's just another technique which i've learned and often apply to vocals in my own productions.
Vocals threated this way will not as easily be removed  as described in the above technical instructions.
I think that every producer has his own technical approach, point of view and personal preferences (or just a very specific assignment) when it comes to vocal threatments so im not really sure which would likely be the most common technique of all but anyway...
