For this part I also started by using the knife to pry up the connection on either side of the battery, although in the end I had to use the pliers to get the rest of it off. You can throw away the clear sticky plastic that comes off first. Then proceed to do the same for the top. Just in case, I saved the black strips from the top and reinstalled them on the new battery.

Careful with the round thing with the black and white wires. I think its the antenna. I had to cut the Y part on mine because it was too damn hard to remove. I think it was spot welded to the battery or something. Anyhow, i plan on extending from the point where i cut with a small gauge wire and solder to the new battery. That way, I wouldnt worry about things being disconnected when I jog.

I had to re-solder one of the black cables (i.e., on the round conductor in the fifth picture above) which had a brittle connection and snapped off.

all and all very informative thank you for taking the time to post it the only suggestion I have is to use a chisel and continue to score around entire sensor takes time but works well had to laugh i am so cheap I took the battery out of one of those talking cards and it was the same battery I needed!when I got done my I pod touch regonized it was on but it wouldn't link up . I wont buy another one from nike what a ripoff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thanks

It wouldn't link up because the battery was already almost dead the same thing happened to me the other day. No surprise really, novelty items such as talking or singing cards are installed with pre-used nearly dead watch batteries and such. That way its not such a waste.

never heard that before possible i guess did check batterry voltage before i put it in with my meter and it was 2.97 .just as a side note if you keep battries in the freezer that will last indeftinely my dad had battries in the freezer for twenty years and they still tested out at full voltage!

Wooah.. i'm trying to get the battery connection out, but the big one has 4 (i think soldering) points that are very difficult to retire! How did you take them out?

Yay! This worked great for me! My sensor looks a little worse off than before, but hey, it lives in a pouch on top of my shoe - who sees it? I certainly don't care that it's now a little battered. Just some battle scars to prove that I rule. I'm actually looking forward to the next time the battery needs replacing so I can "stick it to the man" again by not buying a replacement. Thanks so much - the instructions and pictures were very helpful.
