Step 1Removing the flint and disassembling your zippo

Removing the flint and disassembling your zippo
if your flint is too small from being worn down, or just completly gone, you will need to take apart your zippo. do this by removing the metal portion fomr the colored shell, the same as you would to refill the lighter.

the reason you should only use lighter fluid is because other flamable liquids burn dirtier, which chars the wick alot faster

I don't know why, but I'm surprised that this worked so well. My brother found a Zippo at the theater a year or two ago, and it recently ran out of fluid, and I noticed when flicking it, there was no spark. It had fuel, and it did light, so I'm not entirely sure how that happened without a spark, but now I can actually see that it's sparking, so thanks, mate!

lol, thanks a lot but i should have read all of the steps cuz when i took the wheel of the BIC the flint just shot out.

Yup same here. I finally found it after 10 minutes and it worked great! XD

Wow, this works great! The flint from BIC lighters work much better than the Zippo brand flints. Sometimes it would take a 2/3 sparks to get the Zippo to light. Now it only takes a single spark every time. I think the thicker diameter of the BIC flint allows a better spark which is why I'm seeing a noticeable difference. Great work!

Do they not sell replacement flints for lighters outside the UK? I'm all for using the old flints from a dead disposable - i salvage them for clippers, but from the comments i'm reading some people seem to have not been able to get replacements.

Is the bic flint any thinner than the ones used as standard in zippos? some of the flints on the super cheap chinese lighters are and they just get wedged in the flint tube and ruin the lighter unless you get creative with a drill

hey my zippo fluid just ran dry and i don't have any replacement fluid is there anything around the house i can use instead of zippo fluid like regular ligher fluid for camp fires or something like that?
Dec 7, 2010. 7:33 PMPyroaniac says:
you can use any number of thing as long as you saturate the cotton exp. axe spray, bug repelant suff of that flammability ( or you could go to a smoke shop they sell tons of lighter fluid for cheap

Isopropanol i beleive its called, But to be perfectly honest its rubbing alchohol very convenient very cheap. Burns very well just be sure to be very careful with it i was sent to the hospital with third degree burns. Isopropanol is clear 95% alchohol and odds are is you won't notice if you spill it on yourself, And it really burns running around just feeds the flame. But over all very convenient and easy to find.

You can use lighter fluid. It's much cheaper than zippo fluid.
Nov 11, 2007. 1:47 PMawesomeuspossumus says:
yes, you can use the kind for the grill, it works, im not sure if its better or worse because i have an imitation zippo (it uses the same thing for lighting and stuff) and ive never used the other kind, but you can certainly use camp fire fluid.

gasoline might work and supposedly coleman lantern fluid is cheap cheap cheap and lasts forever sports shop have it a gallon for like 5-8 bucks supposedly its the same material i dont have a zippo, so cant test
Apr 14, 2008. 8:17 PMmondaymonkey says:
Don't use Charcoal Lighter Fluid or Lamp Oil (Parafin) Neither can catch a spark anywhere near as good as a zippo. And once you fill it with a bad fluid, its a pain to flush it out. Down here, its like 1.50 for a can of zippo fuel that lasts forever (12 ounces is plenty!)

To fix a jammed flint wheel: Roll up some paper towel into a flint size cylinder, soak in wd40 abd out down flint tube. Turn wheel until all the paper is spewed out. Done just like brand k new.

Jul 13, 2010. 11:04 AM295291001 says:
Yes there is a felt pad and then several layers of cotton to saturate with something flammable. But it seems that you have a legitimate zippo.

been doing this with dead bick lighters since bick lighters came out in early 1970's well what elease is cool or great a very cheap fueal for the zippo is napa fuel right lighter fuel at 8or 9 dollars a 12 oz plastic bottle or a whole gallion of napha white gas colmans white gas same as lighter fiuid been useing it since 1973 people in world war 2 used white gas in there zippos try it works just fine and you will love the price a zippo is a tought nut to crack means good survival lighter have plenty of fuel and it will light since 1930s hell of a track record.

Please do your home work before acting like a rude genius. Butane is a gas. Period. It may take a liquid form under pressure, but since it appears in a gas form in atmospheric pressure it is a gas.
