Restore disfugred iPod with acetone (against better judgement)

Here is how you get your iPod from looking horribly disfgured to looking just kind of old.

So I found this iPod laying around. It was in bad shape, after putting in a new battery, it was still pretty horribly disfigured. Not only was it just scratched up, there were all these artistic patterns deliberately scratched into it. I imagine it didn’t turn out as expected since there is no instructable on it.

Before I tell you how to restore it, keep in mind that acetone is almost NEVER a good polishing or cleaning solution. It WILL dissolve plastic as soon as you put a drop on the surface and make anything it touches look like its been in a fire. In this case, however, it performed okay.

Step 1: What you need

What you need:

* Acetone from home depot
* Microfiber cloth like for cleaning glasses
* Packing tape

The idea here is to use acetone and the microfiber cloth to get the plastic on the front of the ipod at least polished enough to look foggy.

You can see in the second photo that a layer of plastic with the deliberate scratches has been dissolved, polish it some more.

Step 2:

The idea here is to use acetone and the microfiber cloth to get the plastic on the front of the ipod at least polished enough to look foggy. So put a tiny bit of the acetone on the cloth and rub the plastic as fast as you can without staying in one place, otherwise it will eat through the surface unevenly. After its foggy, we use that same trick as seen in the following youtube video:

So rip a piece of tape off and stick it on the plastic smoothly, do not leave any bubbles. And dont worry about the click-wheel, we'll just cut it out.

Step 3: Cut out the circle and you're done!

Again, do not DO NOT do this unless you really like to take risks with expensive electronics.

The foggy plastic will become clear with tape on it.

I'm not the biggest apple fan but you can beat the living hell out of an ipod and it still keeps going!
