The rope bridge bookshelf lets books have a relaxed home when they're not being read. It can be rough being opened and left in all sorts of locations during the reading process and the books have earned a nice break.

That is so cool, thanks for the share.

From a design perspective few people realize just how valuable such accessories are. Most people think you need to spend an arm and a leg, or hire a designer to achieve a vibrant home. That's simply not true. All you need to do is be creative, find modern furniture for a reasonable price and combine it with items such as this, and you'll have a very clean, yet eclectic look.

I used 5mm steel wire for more strength.

Thank you for this helpful project!

I worked inefficiently and it lasted one week. It could had been ended earlier.
fungus amungus (author) says: Sep 24, 2012. 11:08 AM
Nice! Good call on the wire, too. The paracord has held up, but stronger is better.

i LOVE THIS it would make a cool cat bed if you put carpet on the top of it.
superMacaroni says: Sep 21, 2010. 2:13 AM
That's exactly what I was thinking! It would just have to be a bit bigger.
spectacular says: Dec 21, 2010. 3:55 PM
My cat would sit on it if it was too small or not.

But then again, my cat has a few problems...
beboboba says: Jul 16, 2012. 2:27 PM
I got 99 problems, but a cat ain't one of them.

Thankfully

building_boy says: Nov 13, 2011. 4:30 PM
I made it with stuff from home depot. Now I need to find some studs! :-)
TychaBrahe says: Nov 22, 2011. 5:48 PM
Good luck. I've been looking for a stud for a long time.
facklere says: Sep 10, 2011. 6:07 PM
It looks so fun! I think you must have some of the luckiest books in the world, they must have a very fun time at your house. If I ever find the time, this is definitely going on my list of things to make.
ThreeWestCreative says: Dec 7, 2010. 12:02 PM
This is fantastic! I think it would be great for too if you wanted to make several and dedicate a whole wall to them. I've been wanting to build a bookcase but don't really want a big hulking book case in the corner of my bedroom. But several layers of these on the smallest wall would be great! I could even put little motion activated accent lights under them. :) Thanks!

geekdude says: May 13, 2010. 10:43 AM
wont the books fall over?
Robertwan says: May 14, 2010. 8:46 PM
I don't think they'd be any more unstable than on a normal bookshelf without bookends.
fungus amungus (author) says: May 13, 2010. 11:27 AM
I'm comfortable living with that uncertainty.
oswaldoparra says: May 16, 2010. 8:18 PM
Great answer man! Really clever
spiderham says: May 4, 2010. 6:02 PM
Very cool! How about adding a rope railing to give it some novelty.
fungus amungus (author) says: May 13, 2010. 11:26 AM
Then it would be too literal for me and harder to get the books on and off. There's enough novelty there already.
spiderham says: May 13, 2010. 1:44 PM
I think you missunderstood my use of the word "novelty." What I meant was change the style of the shelf from what I see as contemporary to more eclectic. Personally, I would build the shelf as you did, just thought I'd throw the idea out there for those with less contemporary tastes. It is a great looking shelf.
uberlazy says: May 13, 2010. 8:18 AM
That would be so cool!  Plus, really handy here in California!  (rumble, rumble, shake, shake)  ;)
