Introduction: Rope Bridge Shelf

About: I'm 16 in Waco, Texas. I love being outside and building things, I can build anything with just a few ideas and tools.

I have seen this shelf on instructables a couple of times and it has fascinated me so I decided to make one. It's made from an ordinary ikea shelf but instead of being a boring flat shelf, it is like a rope bridge.

Step 1: Supplies

This shelf is made using ikea brackets and a 7" board I found at lowes. (I couldn't use the ikea board because it was particle board and couldn't be cut) You will also need a thin 6' wire, and a ferrule and stop, but like me you could just use a screw and washer.

Step 2: Sanding and Measuring

You will first need to sand the board, (Remember to sand with the grain) if you want you can also paint it. Next measure and mark out where all the cuts will be made. For mine I made thirteen 2" pieces and two 2.5" pieces.

Step 3: Cut and Mark Holes

Now using a circular saw, make the 15 cuts making them as precise as possible. Now make the marks for the holes. These have to be very precise so make a mark on both sides of the piece. I made mine 2" from the end. It will make a huge difference if you have a drill press, but I didn't and had to use a drill, so it didn't turn out perfect.

Step 4: Begin Threading Wire

Begin to thread the wire through the holes. Make sure the wire is cut straight if it is frayed, it will not fit through the holes.

Step 5: Finish Threading

Once you have the wire threaded through one side loop it around a thread it through to the other side.

Step 6: Secure Wire and Shelf

Once the wire is pulled tight, use the ferrule, or like I used, a screw and washer. After that just put on the two brackets to hold the shelf up. (It might be a tight fit because of the wire) Now your done!

Step 7: Side Notes

I still have a few adjustments I want to make to this so there will be updates soon. Also if you want to see the original version of this project you can find it here:
