Introduction: Run a Radio Station Off of Your PC

This instructable shows you how to create your own internet radio station just off of your home PC!

Step 1: Downloading All of the Software

First you need the proper software.

You will need WinampWinamp

ShoutCast:
DSP Plugin (For Winamp)

Server GUI

Install all of the software and continue to the next step.

Step 2: Configuring Your Router

NOTE:
Required only if behind a router

Open up your router config...usually something like192.168.x.x (Linksys 192.168.1.1)

Go into your Port Forwarding section and enter in:
In Application enter: ShoutCast
In Port enter: 8000
In IP Address enter: (whatever you IP address is behind your router, you can find this in Network Connections in your control panel)

In a new line enter:
Application: Radio Toolbox
Port: 4000
IP: (what you IP is behind router)

Make sure you click Enable otherwise the ports won't be forwarded.

Click Save Settings.

Step 3: Config Files

Now that you have ShoutCast installed you need to open the application named SHOUTcast DNAS (GUI). Click on Edit Config.

In the config you need to change the following lines:
MaxUser (how many users can be connected to your server) cannot be more than 15 or so or else it will lag.

password (this is the password that needs to be entered when configuring you winamp stuff, not to connect to the server) change it to whatever.

and thats it!

Step 4: Configurinn Winamp

Now you need to configure the SHOUTcast plugin for Winamp.

On the top of the program click Options>Prefrences

This will open up the prefrences menu. On the left, scroll down and under Plug-Ins click on DSP/Effect. Double click on Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP.

When the menu opens up click the Encoder Tab.
Click Encoder 1. Select MP3 Encoder. Under that select any bitrate (128kbps is MAXIMUM reccomended...great quality).

Now click on the Output tab. Select Output 1. The only thing you have to change is the password (should be what you specified in the Config of the server in the last step) Leave everything else alone.

Now in the same window click on the Yellowpages button. Check Make this Server Public. Then enter in the information of your choice. Leave Enable Track Title Updates enables along with the two auto buttons below it.

Go onto the next step....

Step 5: Setting Up Radio Toolbox

This section is optional but it is a good idea so you can get a fancy page for your Radio Station.

Download Link: Radio Toolbox

Download the program and install it.

Open it up and press Add Server. Enter in your IP Address (NOT your IP behind your router!!! to find your IP go to http://ipchicken.com) and put :8000 behind it (no spaces). Then click ok.

Click on File>Options>Web Service
Make sure the port is 4000
Max users doesnt matter
Check auto refresh
Enter in you desired admin information
Unclick protect all pages

Step 6: Launching Your Radio Station

FINAL STEP!!!

Open your Shoutcast DNAS (GUI)
Open Winamp and open the shoutcast plugin. Click connect (in Output).
Open Radio Toolbox and click Start Log.
Play some music in Winamp.

Status Page: yo.ur.IP:4000 (go to ipchicken.com to find your IP)

Now all you have left to do is tell your friends!

You are done!

Is there a way to be talking on your station, and not just play music

author
part15er made it!(author)2009-08-28

In the Shoutcast DSP there is a tab labeled "input" click it then select "soundcard input" now below that are two buttons, one labled microphone and the other Line-in. Choose line-in. Next thing you do is purchase a mixing board, best one to get for under $100 is from Behringer. Look for the Podcastudio. That is what I use. Using a laptop or another computer to play music into the mixer. That really is the best way to mix between mic and music. but then i work in radio so its just second nature for me. :)

Ok thanks, is there a way to change from one to another during broadcast

author
Jacobdm0 made it!(author)2007-08-30

I'm pretty sure you can change WHILE your broadcasting, but there will be 3 seconds of dead air inbetween the switch.

in the input tab of your winamp plugin switch it to soundcard input, then hit open mixer and select stereo mixer and mess withe the levels...then close the mixer and go back into the plugin and select microphone instead of line in and then press push to talk....it sounds like crap and there is a better way...i just dont know it....

author
assm4n made it!(author)2007-08-30

there is but i cant remember how to do it.....ill get back to you

author
Jacobdm0 made it!(author)2007-08-30

On the SHOUTcast plugin, instead of having winamp as the input, change it to "Sound Card input" Then you can talk through your mic.

Unless you have a router. If you have a router you will need your external IP and to get that you need to view the stats on your router in order to view the IP.

author
part15er made it!(author)2009-08-28

Another way to find your ip address would be whatsmyip.org if your still not sure then in windows start/run/cmd/ipconfig -all should show internal/external ip and other mind boggling numbers.

how is it NOT legal?

author
HammyHavoc made it!(author)2008-09-16

It all depends on what you use the station for, very much like radio equipment, not illegal to own it, but without a license, you can get locked up, but that does NOT apply to internet radio, HOWEVER, always ask permission or pay the fees!

author
kolanut made it!(author)2008-09-02

it's not leagle if you broadcast copyrighted content without having a BMI, ASCAP, Sesac contract!
If your content is creative commons, then it's allowed to be used without paying. I use Live 365 because they pay the fee's for my broadcast:

I contact the artist directly and more often than not they let me use their material for free because they want more popularity.

When editing the log Notepad opens. I tried saving it as (.txt) and also (.ini) Nothing happened when saved as (.txt), but when I saved it under (.ini) the log gets an error. Something about all the lines have errors...please help!
