Heh, it was actually about 30 years old, so pretty rusty. I guess it is well worth to cost to still be standing strong against a 165 lbs force about 15 years after it was actually needed. If you look closer at the picture, you can see it was less than a cm away from hitting my eye.

I got the exact same result using vinegar... just took longer, and I didn't use cola to remove the oxide, just a toothbrush and hot water. I was cleaning rust off of 20 old rail spikes, but I may try this method next time!
