 by Sunny124613

I was in a small art class
and we were using a
type of clay called "salt-dough"
The teacher told us how to make it.
I am a little rusty so if you have any

Love salt clay I have 15 recipes for it, all work fantastic. I still have xmas decorations for the tree I made as a kid (well over twenty years ago) that look as fantastic as they did when I first made them. You can coat these with clear spray paint or clear nail polish might help with putting them outside. :)

Would it work outside.

um...... it will harden over night, but for fun, try to make a dough out of 4 cups brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of jam, and 4-8 table spoons of olive oil or conola oil. also this brown dough could be used to make fake poop!

My daughter is having a slumber party and she loves your recipe for play doh. She is wanting each girl to make the play doh and then a bowl and for me to cook them. How much will this recipe make? Will this be a good size for each child? Also do you know the best time to cook it or would just watching it be the best way. I would be cooking about 6 bowls. Can you put a glaze over them once done cooking to hold them together better. Thank you for such a great fun cheap activity for our girls!

This stuff will keep if refrigerated.

If you want to bake it to harden it, do it at a low temperature (approx. 200 degrees Fahrenheit) for several hours. You can put some aluminum foil of the top of it to keep it from browning, but if you are going to paint it, it doesn't really matter if it is going to brown or not.

Hi everyone!  I just signed up and I am delighted to be part of this group!  I used salt dough clay to construct an Easter gift for my mother at least 15 years ago.  Happy to say it's still in good shape!  I made an "Easter at Grandma's House scene.  I just wanted to share a few ideas that I had discovered "by accident"

My favorite:  push the dought through the holes of a metal seive, or strainer and you will get curly hair!  Use something  with larger holes and you can get long curls!  thin craft wire makes wonder specs!  Use a cheese shreader for a layered soft wavey hairdo.  Really, just look around your kitchen and let your imagination work for you!

Happy Crafting!  Ginger

Sounds like you could use a garlic press here.

could i make this ahead of time.. Im going to do hand prints for my son's pre-k class and i was wanting to roll it out and have the cirlcles ready for them to just place their hands in it.. If i place them on cookie sheets and cover it w/ plastic rap do you think it would be soft enough for them? And also do i let them air dry for a life time keep or should i bake them? i would like to do this tomorrow am..

You add food coloring to the water, or while it is in a mushy state.

quick question. when you back it, is it somewhat durrable? like what kind of hardness are we looking at here. i was planning to make something, but i dont have anything to mold, so i was gonna make some.
Sunny124613 (author) in reply to crystalguy99Jun 16, 2010. 10:04 AM
Um, what do you mean by "back it"

Also, the hardness is somewhat close to when you leave play-doh out for a REALLY long time. But, if you have never experienced that feeling, then it pretty much is as hard as a rock , only if you leave it in the oven for the time recommended :D

(also, if its gonna be on a coffee table or something like that, then make sure you don't have and protuding details, for they might get smashed off or worse, they could stab someone. ) :D

sorry, meant to spell "bake" but didnt catch that error. and thanks alot!

Oh, no problem!

I made this with my class - we made ornaments - we added about 2 tablespoons of cinnimon to get it a holiday smell - we placed them in the sun to harden - I tried to put in the oven but I used self-rising flous so they came out all distorted - I would suggest using plain flour and only leavin t=in the oven for about 3 or 4 minutes
Sunny124613 (author) in reply to powefolksJun 16, 2010. 9:59 AM
Yes, just use all purpose flour (sorry about not putting that in the materials ;) Also, I really don't think you should leave it in the oven for 3 or 4 minutes, it might not be hard enough to place on a shelf or desk with out drooping.
karalnny says: Feb 19, 2009. 2:49 PM
if you leave this out will it harden?? cause i need something that WILL!! for an art class, we have to make something that will harden with OUT heating up...
dombeef in reply to karalnnyOct 12, 2009. 5:24 PM
It will Probably harden but she didnt do it in a long time so we forgot the results

Sunny124613 (author) in reply to AyaanSep 30, 2008. 4:49 AM
hmmm, you just cook it in the oven for about 4 hours, but look it up.I dont want any bad points because art work was burnt... but if you want a few more days before you paint, just let it air dry.
dombeef in reply to AyaanSep 28, 2008. 6:51 AM

Sunny124613 (author) in reply to ThelonelysandwitchAug 10, 2008. 12:12 PM
um,ew,but yes. you could but i think that all of the salt would clog up ur heart in just one bite.I wouldnt eat it but i did once.It tasted pretty nasty
Thelonelysandwitch in reply to Sunny124613Aug 11, 2008. 9:20 AM
Right after I posted the question I made some and took a lick. I almost puked and my friend made up excuses so he couldn't taste it (I am allergic to salt.....lol).
