Introduction: SHOWER FILTER FOR CHEAP Bad Water Make You Itch? Make a Great Shower Filter for 1/2 of Buying One

The water at my house is not the best and when I take a shower it smells chemicals and makes me itch. I rent the house so I can't really put a whole house filter on so I fig I would just put a shower filter on. I went to the all knowing inter web to price them. I found they run from 50 to over 100 bucks!!
DIY TIME.... Here is what I did and I'm sure you can vary this a ton of ways.

Step 1: PARTS and TOOLS for Your New Shower Water Filter

You will need: (I got everything at Home Cheapo but you can get this stuff online or any hardware or home improvement store)

(1) Whole House Filter (GE GXWH04F) $17.98
(1) Household Sediment Filter (We will get in to that more on the filter step) $ 4.00
(2) Reducer Bushing mipi x fipt 3/4 x 1/2 $ .63 ea. $ 1.26
(1) Pipe Nipple (Chrome, Galvanized, Nickel, ect.) Galvanized cheapest $ .92
(1) 6" Shower Arm (you may not need this if you can use your old one)

total cost around $25.00

Tools:
Pipe wrench (smooth or put a bunch of tape on it)
Cresent wrench
Roll Teflon Tape

Step 2: Remove Shower Arm From Wall

Remove your shower arm by unscrewing it out of the wall. You may need a pipe wrench (put a bunch of tape on it so you don't scratch it all up with the pipe wrench).

Now put some teflon tape (so it won't leak) on the pipe nipple and screw it in the hole. You should have about 1 inch plus threads sticking out.

Step 3: Get the Filter Ready

Get the reducer bushings and put teflon tape on them. Next screw them into filter body with wrench (get them tight).

Step 4: Put It on the Wall

Get the shower arm (with shower head on it) and put some teflon tape on the threads then screw it into the "OUT" side of the filter body.

Now put some teflon tape on the pipe nipple coming out of the wall. Get the filter body and screw the whole thing on. It can hang down or point up it does not matter.

Step 5: Put the Filter in the Body

Pick a filter. I use a Household Sediment filter that is 5 to 15 microns.
At Home Chepo you can get 2 packs of filters:
15 to 30 microns for $ 7.99
5 to 15 microns for $ 8.99
1 to 5 microns for $ 11.49
I have been told that the filters that use charcoal as one of active ingredient are the ones that get rid of chlorine.
They all work good. Anything more you are going to kill your water pressure in your shower (thats Bad)

The most important thing I found is to get a filter with the big hole all the way though see pic 2.

If you have the small hole it will filter better but give you no water pressure see pic 3

Put the filter in the body like it sez in the directions that came with it.
..... and your done enjoy a cleaner shower.

NOTE: Look at my intro pic I also have a hose and valve attached to it so i can fill bottles up with filtered water.
