Safety Pin Wings

This is the design that my friends like the most out of my safety pin jackets, and a few people have told me they'd like an instructable on how to make them. So here we go! A more general set of instructions for a safety pin jacket is available here.

Step 1: You Will Need:

Supplies:
1) Jacket (or whatever you want your design to go on)
2) Sizes 1, 2, and 3 safety pins. (This jacket used around 200 size 1, 4 size 2, and 14 size 3 steel pins)
3) Ruler
4) Light colored pencil or chalk
5) Needle and thread

I'm working on one now and putting beads on the pins as I go. It's going to take a long time, but I think it will be pretty.

I sort of want to do this to my old Moleskin jacket, But as it's a WW2 German Moleskin I'm worried that the safety pins might leave noticeable holes in it, in case I wanted to take them out. :/

I did this on my jacket with copper safety pins a few months ago. Alas, they slowly fell off before I could take a picture. I have a new jacket now, perhaps I'll redo it.

I'm thinking of doing this on my jacket, and threading feathers through the safety pins...bit hard to wash though...

If you crimped the safety pins, they wouldn't come undone.
I found a crimper at walmart for cheap and it works fine.

Very nice. Sooner or later someone is going to figure out that crafters want colored safety pins. Let's hope sooner. Hmmm. I am envisioning various colored ribbons wound through the pins. Or thread or yarn looped on the pins. OK, this opens doors. Thanks!

I can't wait to do this. Currently I have a plain hoodie that I decorated by safety pinning a giant UPC symbol that I cut off from the front of an old t-shirt. I love the look of the safety pins all around the edge of the logo. But this is gonna look way better. I'm planning on getting a tattoo soon of a dove with flaming wings in the center of my back, so this will be awesome because it will be my "outside tattoo"

I don't know, the thing is that you wouldn't be able to wash it in the machine, which could be inconvenient for a hoodie if you wear it a lot. That's why I use jackets, you end up wearing them less often. (But I also have about eight of these, so I can rotate.)

You can also spray vinegar on it, then wash it.

I put my vest through the wash no prob. so it can't be too bad. Oh and I figured out a way to fix the mistake i made before. thanks for the instructables.

Awesome! I was way too chicken to try putting any of mine through the machine. Gotta be careful though, 'cuz unless they say "rust-proof", they probably will. I've actually found a few rusty pins in a fresh package once or twice. I'm dying to see your jacket! Once you fix the design, you have to show me a picture!

I think if they come loose in the washer it would make a huge problem- but you can't wear a dirty jacket so you're no worse off if it rusts while you clean it. Washing clothes by hand is not very hard (I handwash handknits) and if part is very dirty you can put detergent on a (dedicated) toothbrush.

Nice! I was thinking of making a black duct tape jacket but I didn't know what I could design it with. Safety pins are an awesome idea! :) And wings are pretty cool. If I end up making it I'll post a picture.

Well, the stitching part is kinda important too. The pins won't lie flat unless you stitch them, and sewing also helps to keep them from coming unhooked.
