In the famous phrase attributed to Voltaire, we have the assurance that "the pen is mightier than the sword." Today, this statement is even more powerful, even if fewer people keep the habit of handwriting.

Em famosa frase atribuída a Voltaire, temos a afirmativa de que "a pena é mais poderosa que a espada". Nos dias de hoje, esta afirmação é ainda mais poderosa, mesmo que cada vez menos pessoas mantenham o hábito da escrita manuscrita.

Despite being a technology lover, I have appreciation for the old fountain pens. With the intention of leaving them exposed with all the respect they deserve, I decided to design a support prioritize both the visibility of the pens, and the reverence that some of these writing instruments, sometimes much older than me, should receive. The clear inspiration comes from the holders of Japanese swords, usually made of wood and painted in black lacquer. In my project I used:

CNC router / laser or jewelry saw

Apesar de ser um amante da tecnologia, tenho apreço pelas antigas canetas tinteiro. Com a intenção de deixa-las expostas com todo o respeito que elas merecem, resolvi desenhar um suporte que priorizasse tanto a visibilidade das canetas, assim como a reverência que alguns destes instrumentos de escritas, por vezes bem mais velhos que eu, deveriam receber. A inspiração clara, vem dos suportes de espadas japonesas, normalmente feitos em madeira e pintados em laca negra. Em meu projeto utilizei:

CNC router/laser ou serra de joalheria

Step 1: Cutting and Mounting

As I mentioned, I used black acrylic to build my support, that has been cut on a CNC router with a 1.5mm bit. Given the simplicity of the design, it could also be easily cut with a hand saw jewelry. The use of acrylic in my case was to have the product available in hand, but this is a support that can easily be reproduced in wood, with beautiful results.

Como citei, utilizei acrílico negro para construir meu suporte, que foi cortado em uma CNC router com bit de 1.5mm. Dado a simplicidade do desenho, ele também poderia ser facilmente cortado manualmente com uma serra de joalheria. O uso do acrílico em meu caso foi por ter o produto disponível em mão, mas está é um suporte que pode facilmente ser reproduzido em madeira, com belos resultados.

With all the pieces in hand, you will have two columns, a central bar (it's the best place to make a customization, in my opinion) and parts of the base. At the base you will have to make a choice. If you want it to be slimmer, then use the four narrow rectangles, or if you want it to be more robust, then use the two smaller rectangles and the largest rectangular base. In the pictures you can see how is each model.

Com todas as peças em mãos, você terá duas colunas, uma trave central (é o melhor ponto para fazer uma customização, em minha opinião) e as peças da base. Na base você terá que fazer uma escolha. Se quer que ela seja mais esbelta, então utilizará os quatro retângulos estreitos, ou se quer que ela seja mais robusta, então utilizará os 2 retângulos menores e a base retangular maior. Nas fotos você pode ver como fica cada um dos modelos.

Given the way it was designed, the ideal is to start assembling the central bar, fixing it in two columns, and then place the pieces that form the basis (either in the slim model is the robust). In either case, fix the columns in the lower part of the base is sufficient to lock the finish of the base and the central bar, but if you want greater rigidity, use glue in all anchorage points.

Dado a maneira com que ele foi desenhado, o ideal é começar a montagem pela trave central, fixando-a nas duas colunas, e posteriormente colocar as peças que formam a base (seja no modelo esbelto , seja no robusto). Em ambos os casos, fixar as colunas nas peça mais inferior da base é o suficiente para travar o acabamento da base e a trave central, mas se quiser maior rigidez, utilize cola em todos os pontos de encaixe.

Step 2: Finishing

If you followed the few instructions here exposed, now has a nice support for your pens, which need neither be as old as the here exposed. As I said earlier, the central bar is a good place to customize this support, as shown in one of the photos above. The robust base, despite being much larger, is an area that does not have a good view, to have visibility hindered by the columns and the bar.

Se você seguiu as poucas instruções aqui expostas, agora tem um belo suporte para suas canetas, que não precisam nem ser tão antigas quanto as aqui expostas. Como falei anteriormente, a barra central é um bom local para customizar este suporte, como mostrado em uma das fotos acima. A base robusto, apesar de ser bem maior, é uma área que não tem uma boa visualização, por ter a visibilidade prejudicada pelas colunas e pela barra.
